This site breaks down the 2005 NBA Draft early entries into categories. There is a category for players who are entering just to see where they stand, but they place Martellus in the category of players who don't think that they can stay academically eligible in college.
I don't know if there is any truth to it, but it makes sense. He is a lock for the NFL in three years, and is a long shot for the NBA. However, since the NFL has an age minimum, that may explain why he's so interested in basketball, were he can jump to the NBA when school seems too hard.
