View Full Version : It's time we start playing Cougar high again

Cougar High use to be one of our bigger rivals back in the old SWC days. It looks like they are starting to turn that program around, so why don't we play them again? Just think of what a great recruiting tool that would be, plus it could be played at Reliant Stadium. I'd much rather see the cougars than the Citadel.

While I still would rather see LSU on our schedule every year again, we do need to play some games against Houston. I agree we could use those games for recruiting advantages.

Oh hell yes, I love hating L.S.U.

I would like to see us play U of H as well, but I disagree that it would help recruiting. If anything, it would hurt it. We rarely compete with Cougar High for recruits, so why would it help? We already have alot of success recruiting in Houston. If for some reason we lost to them, then it definitely hurts us, but us winning does not help us. In order to help recruiting, we need to play and BEAT the teams that we are going head to head with for recruits.

If Houston continues to be successful, we will have to start competing with them for recruits. Art Briles is the real deal over there.

Ding! Ding! Ding!!!!
Thats the same reason why it does us no good to play L$U. The last thing they need is a venue in the state to recruit from once every other year.

How about we start beating the majority of teams in our conference before we start planning a perrenial top 10 team OOC?

I thought you were talking about L$U. There is nothing at all we can gain from playing U of H. Did you not read P-vile's post that I agreed with.

Did you forget that I didn't say that I agreed with you? Texas has a big influence in Houston as well. If we were able to play in Reliant it couldn't hurt. At least players down there would see us play rather than watch us play Citadel.

Man, SA...you are out there today. You said nothing about any of that. You simply said, "We should nut up & beat them." Sorry, dude, but I can't read your mind. We have done a great job of recruiting Houston & at this time, we would gain nothing by beating them, but would lose a lot by losing to them.
However, Boozin is right. Art Briles is a helluva coach & he has that program headed in the right direction. And if they take care of him & keep him there it might not be too far down the road that we are competing with them for recruits. So the question is, do you wait until we are at that point & then go beat the hell outta of them or do you play them now? By playing them now you are probably giving them an avenue to help recruiting before they are ready. I say we wait until they prove that they can turn it all the way around & then lets look to play them.

This is why I say we nut up and beat them now... I know all about Art watching he and Brownwood battle it out for years.

While there is nothing gained by playing Cougar High, I wouldn't object a 2 for 1 deal with them, with the game in Houston played at Reliant.

Actually, more exposure in Houston would be great. While we've had some success in Houston, tu has had more success in pulling out talent from there in the last 5 or 6 years. tu, BTW, has played Cougar High and Rice recently.

t.u. has had more success in pulling recruits from everywhere, not just Houston. It has nothing to do with them playing Rice. The only reason is that they have been winning 10+ games per year while were are missing bowl games.

What about a rotating schedule. Maybe we schedule on week a year that is an old SWC opponent? UH, Arkie, Rice, and SMU/TCU... Something like Kyle UH 2007, @arkie 2008, Rice Kyle 2009, SMU/TCU @ jerryville 2010 Then start back at the front with alternate venues. I know everyone is scared of TCU but we've got to play them sometime. If Baylor and Tech will do it we have to.

How did that work out for Baylor and Tech? t.u. will find out all about playing TCU next year too.

Dude we can't be scared to play other teams. It's rediculous. TCU is the perfect preseason game. Sure they're good but I believe that we should play some decent talent. I like that we played Utah and Clemson the past couple of years. Next year we're supposed to play Miami and we're scared of TCU that's terrible.

The days of playing big time teams are over because strength of schedule is no longer a factor. We should be lucky Byrne didn't cancel the Miami game. With the added extra game we have to play and no bye week after non conference anymore, we can't afford to play teams like Lsu. It always seems we play brutal conference teams in November like Neb, OU, and tu back to back to back. From here on out look for us to play 2 cupcakes and 2 middle of the road teams. I for one would rather have a win and build confidence, than get beat and the team having to scramble to try to maintain focus for the rest of the year.

There really is no incentive to play big name schools anymore. Strength of schedule is no longer a factor in the BCS and losing a game to a strong team can end up hurting your bowl placement while beating a cupcake doesn't.

Great point, Burnet. Thats the exact same philosophy that BCG had when he took over the basketball team. Until we get this team to where it needs to be, there is no need to increase OOC SOS. Bottom line is this....if at the end of the season, we're undefeated, we'll play for the MNC--with the exception of getting Auburned. But even SOS wouldn't overcome that--that had to do with where they started out in the polls rather than who they played.

I want to see us play decent BCS conference teams from outside of Texas. They do not need to be top 25 teams, just decent teams from a good conference.

I agree that right now scheduling LSUs might not be the best idea, but then football scheduling is done pretty far in advance as I understand it (which is probably not alot).
I would love to see us play a team like LSU or even UH. For one, LSU used to be a big game for us. But also, while I like the Big XII, it's kind of a strange fit in my mind. I grew up in SE TX outside of Houston. Places like Iowa, Kansas etc are meaningless to me. I've never been up there, never known anybody from there, no one that I went to high school with went up there for school.
But people from my hometown do go or did go to places like UH, LSU, and Ole Miss, etc. So I'd like to see some games against teams like that. The games would just be more fun for me. It's purely personal, but still my preference. Add that in with the history of playing UH or LSU . . .

I like the idea of playing UH at Reliant.
Even though it's in Houston, at least 75% of the crowd would be Aggies. We are the better program, and would win a majority of the games. It increases our exposure in Houston. Granted, we already recruit Houston very well, but any edge we can get there is good. Also, Houston is good enough that ESPN or ESPN2 would probably pick the game up, creating TV revenue. This would be a great replacement for games against I-AA teams, and prepare our team better for Big XII play.

So are the Miami games definite, or is it gonna fall apart? I wouldn't mind going down there to watch a game.

Since those games are the next two years, I think they'll stick. I would think that it would be too late to cancel.

When I was in Miami it like 80% ghetto. Once you get out of the rich part of town which is like 20% of the town it gets dangerous. The university is in the bad part of town. I watched a drug deal go down and the dude pulled a knife and stabbed the other guy and ran off. I'll never go back to Miami again.

Speaking of "nutting up" and playing old foes, Fort Worth was always a great road trip for A&M.
We can only dodge them for so long. Fran nay not like it, but he's gotta do it sooner or later. And the more we put it off, the worse it looks for us.

I'd take A&M vs TCU neutral site game every year instead of tech.

No - I'd do the home-and-away rotation, not a neutral site. Playing in Fort Worth would basically be a home game for A&M anyway, for reasons similar to playing in Reliant Field in Houston - every loyal Ag alumni from Dallas and Fort Worth would be there.
Nothing prettier than the Corps and Band marching down Main Street in Fort Worth with the old courthouse in the background on a crisp autumn morning - one of the best Corps trips ever.
Them was the days, boys!

TCU plays at t.u. next year... I'd love to get some annual OOC games against the old SWC teams... much better than playing ULaLa, LaTech, Texas State, etc.

Supperaggie79, I was thinking the same thing. I'd like to see us rotate our old SWC opponents into our schedule periodically. In my opinion we should schedule:
Game 1 - a true patsy (Lower D1-A or D1-AA)
Game 2 - Mid-major conference opponent
Game 3 - BCS conference opponent
Game 4 - patsy or mid-major to work out any kinks before conference play starts.

Here's how I'd do it:
Game 1: Bad I-A team (SMU, LaLa, UCF)
Game 2: Bad BCS conference team (Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Stanford, South Florida)
Game 3: Great opponent (Miami, Notre Dame, Arkansas)
Game 4: Good mid-Major (TCU, Utah, Houston)

Only problem with that Loftin is that it sets up two potential losses in OOC games. I would like to see one bad I-A team, two bad BCS teams, and one great opponent.
