The Horns' veteran defense held Iowa State to just 46 yards on the ground, but gave up 303 in the air.

looks like isu's air game is still working

The is a big debate going on another site *cough*Websider*cough* about the sips D and whether chizick sucks or not. Texas' D ranks 81st in passing, but 3rd in running and 18th overall through the first 4 games.

They were pretty much throwing the ball every down in the second half. They were getting some yards there, but we were taking them all back with sacks (7).

I'm not sure our defense is as good as I thought it was, but ISU has a pretty good passing game. If the gamble is to give up some plays in front of you and allow only 14 points, I can deal with that. That's exactly what we did against Tech last year.

Well.... if you look at the sips stats from last year they gave up more passing yards than rushing yards because they play with the lead so they are forced to cover the pass more often, so while I love to see a bad stat line on the sips... you have to take that with a grain of salt....

Having said that... if you look at recent history.... tu's defense has fallen victim to the same thing that any defense (good or bad) has fallen to... when they are faced with a team that can run the ball on them, that is when they truely struggle.....

If you air it out on tu & only air it out, you play into their hands... while they will give up more passing yards than rushing yards, more often than not, they will still beat you by 30 or 40 points... but if you can make them respect the run much like we did, USC, Ohio State & others who have either fallen short or who have beaten them, that is when you can expose not only them, but any defense.... it's just simple football law of nature.....

Having said that... talent wise... I still think the tu defense is one of the top defenses in the Big 12 & most of the nation, but what I think they lack this season is that explosive offense...they will score on teams, primarily because of that massive offensive line, but so far this season I don't see that same quick strike offense any more.... or at least not as flashy.... they kill you slowly instead of quickly this year..... teams who would have been done before 1/2 time will now have a shot & be in a game against tu late into the 3rd quarter... the key is pounding the ball on that defense.... and staying with it.....

If you get Gene to start calling run defensive plays, then you will find bigger plays against tu in the passing game..

Obviously, any team is stronger on defense when they're only facing one threat.

But if you look over the last two years, only three teams have really run on us for any purpose other than to keep us honest--OU, USC and A&M. tOSU last year didn't run on us and this year used the run not as the base of their offense but to keep us honest against their pass.

I don't expect that to change.

We haven't shown the ability to score, btw, on one or two play drives this year, that's true. But with the exception of the game against tOSU, where we shot ourselves in the foot with a goal line fumble, we've moved the ball down the field pretty damn quick. We had some pretty big plays against ISU. Most teams will still be playing catch-up to us.

The key to defense anyway isn't not giving up yards, it is stopping drives. And we did that remarkably well against ISU. Remember, this is the same team (possibly better) that put up 41 on you guys at home last year before calling of the dogs. They played a very good Iowa team competitively.

Bear in mind also, that there's been significant talk on Aggie boards about the vast improvement of yall's defense. Whether that is true, despite the fact that two of our opponents this year are significantly better offensively than any team you guys have played, our defenses, statistically, look very much the same (although you guys have given up, on balance a more even number of pass/rush yards).

Dude.... chill... I am not trying to tear down your defense... they are good squad... I am just saying that to see a team with a huge number of passing yards against tu isn't surprising becuase they have too..... But if you start out like that against tu... your good as dead & shouldn't have even played against them.....

And like I said... ya'll will score & be effective.... I am not trying to take away anything from your team... yet.... ;) , Yeah your offense shot itself in the foot... every team does that... it's expected.... I am just saying that this years tu team looks more like a team that will drive down the field on you instead of a team that will go down the field on you in just one play.....

To point out that ISU tore our Defense apart is cheezy at best:rolleyes: .... don't get so sensitive..... Pointing that out, is like saying the sky is blue... it's pretty obviouse that our defense wasn't any good last year... I mean just look at our ranking..... But they are defense that has shown improvement this year... and I for 1 am very pleased with what I see.... if we finish between 50-65 I will be happy......

But as I said.... I was neither trying to tear them down or build them up... just trying to say the simple truth..... It's not just ya'lls defense, but any defense.... If you can run on a defense, you can pass on them....

Nothing personal.... yet.... ;) I have grown some respect for a few sips... a very few sips (5 to be exact).... in the year I have been on this site.... you are one.... so I am holding off the dogs.... at least until Thanksgiving week... at that point in time..... unlike for the other sips, the gloves come off.... :gig: :towel:
