The greatest game i've EVER had the privelage to watch was when the aggies beat SMU in 1985. It was a night game and my fifth year. SMU was still a major powerhouse, but would get the death penality after the season. We were on ESPN, infact we wound up on ESPN quite a bit that year. In the 4th quarter, the aggies decided to kick a three pointer. Who do they bring out but Eric Franklin, brother of the greatest kicker EVER, Tony Franklin, one of the first barefooted kickers, and aggie great, along with a great pro with the New England Patriots. Eric walks out and kicks a wobbler thru the goal post and we go ahead by two I think. We still had 4 or 5 minutes left and SMU was driving. With just a few minutes left, they lined up to kick a three pointer which would give them the lead, and probably the victory. I'll never forget, I tell my roommate, "We're gonna block that kick, I feel it." You could feel the electricity in the air, infact i'm getting chills just thinking about this moment. The ball was snapped and a maroon blur comes thru the offensive line, and blocks the kick. Domingo Bryant lay on the ground holding his family jewels, but the kick was blocked. The place erupted, it was pandemonium. We beat SMU, and that we knew we were on the road to the Cotton bowl. We would then beat the hillbillies of Arkansas, and then my second favorite game, the t.u. game, were it would rain cotton from the decks of kyle field.
Now the worst. I was a youngster in 1975, the Aggies were undefeated going into our last game against #18 Arkansas. We had just beaten #5 t.u. The day of the game, number 1 Ohio State had lost, and the aggies were 2nd in the nation. We made the cover of Sports Illustrated, which is a major jinx, I believe Curtis Dickey or Bubba Bean was on the cover. My dad and I, along with a buddy of mine and his dad both of who were longhorn fans, were deer hunting. I'll never forget it, it was cold that day in November, and all I could think about out in the stand was the aggies. We get back to the ranch house, and I run to the t.v. I turn on ABC and check the scores. I am anxious and want to see how bad we beat Arkansas. 6-31, Arkansas upsets the aggies! I was 12 years old, and was devistated. I started to cry, and I mean cry. My buddy was laughing at me and the aggies defeat, and all I could do was cry like a baby. No one in my family had gone to TAMU, in fact my mother was an alumni of SMU.
That was a defining moment for me, and I knew I was bound for TAMU.
2nd worst memory, turning on the radio and finding out that the Aggies who were ranked #1 in playboy's preseason poll, and top three in others loses to Southwest Lousisana, now known as Univ La La. After that I had it in for R.C.:(
