Willie finds himself homeless again

CaneSport.com Staff
It's only fitting that the Willie Williams saga continues to take strange twists and turns.

The once top national prospect sought to be accepted into several Division I programs after requesting his release from Miami, never finding a home.

But he finally found a taker in Pearl River Community College in Mississippi. Two days ago the coach there, Tim Hatten, said that Williams had been accepted at the school and that he welcomed Williams with open arms.

But now, in a non-coach related decision, the school has turned away Williams.

"Willie is not coming here," Hatten said. "We had a conversation. We needed to get some thing done and they didn't get done.

"I have a football team to run here. I have no idea where he'll be."

Unless the redshirt sophomore already has another program in his sights, he now faces dwindling options for this season with classes starting soon around the nation.

He may have to sit out the year without enrolling at a program.

Williams played in 10 games off the bench at Miami last year and had 17 tackles, two for losses. He was a special teams standout.

But he stopped showing up for off-season workouts and explored his transfer options. He could technically return to Miami before the start of classes and enroll under scholarship -- UM has already renewed his scholarship and can't renege on that. He could attend school and have his tuition paid for, but it's unlikely he'd be welcomed back to the Hurricanes team at this point.

Would you want him on playing on our team?

Do you think he would fit in?

With Dodge, Featherson, Lewis & Tupe coming back next season where would you see him fitting in?

Just a thought....

Too much of a risk. Here is a link to a thread from a few weeks ago where we discussed it a little.

That dude is bad news but if he could walk the line, then suit him up.

Too high of a risk, IMO.

I'd take him. He's kept himself out of trouble the last 2 seasons, and he has unbelievable potential. I'd take him on the condition that we drop him after his first "issue," if there is one.

Think I would pass. At this point you have to see the writing on the wall despite his potential. I'll take character over potential anyday of the week, but that is just me.

Never. I believe in recruiting good morals over physical ability.

Bad apples spread like the plague, am I right Reggie?

He's already shown his lack of character. Pass him by.

If that was the case why didn't we just get RT? I say NO, let the guy simmer in JC football.

The bigger the risk the bigger the reward.

Cheap? Maybe...

Earned? No doubt!

Reggie didn't care about A&M football. Reggie cared about Reggie, and his attitude carried on to other players while he was here.

I'm glad he's gone because now we have kids who want to win. Kids who care about team. Kids who care about one another and help each other. Kids who don't have the "me first" attitude like Reggie had. Kids who are learning under excellent leaders like Stephen McGee, Justin Warren, Tydrick Riley, Chad Schroeder, Red Bryant, Mark Dodge... Leaders who actually lead and teach what a priviledge it is to play here at A&M.

Sure, Reggie was talented. He had no heart. Not for A&M anyway.

I'm excited for the coming season. These kids are hungry to show everyone that A&M is back, and back with a vengeance!

Evidently, even the jucos don't want him. I saw where he was prevented from transferring to a CC in Florida.

W. Williams won't return

Web Vote | Should the Hurricanes take back LB Willie Williams? (http://forums.miami.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=kr-canes&msg=5219.1&ctx=1)
A day after Willie Williams was denied a transfer to Pearl River Community College in Mississippi, UM coach Larry Coker was asked the burning question: Would he let Williams back on the team?
''Well, that's not an option,'' Coker said firmly. ``He's not coming back here. Willie has decided to go in another direction, and we wish him the best.
Coker then paused, ``But, you know, if he wants to talk, we'll talk. But that's not the case, and I don't anticipate Willie Williams being a part of this team.''
Williams has been unreachable since it was first learned he wanted to transfer. Carol City coach Walt Frazier said late last month that he had not heard from Williams in a long time.
''Willie has basically isolated himself from the world,'' Carol City assistant Andre Stafford said. ``Unless you're family, or one of his real close friends, he doesn't talk to you no more.''
Voice and text messages left on Williams' cellphone Thursday by The Miami Herald were not returned. Coker gave Williams, the nation's most highly recruited linebacker in 2004, permission last month to seek a transfer in search of more playing time. But Williams, who slipped down the depth chart in the spring, didn't find many takers -- until Monday when Pearl River coach Tim Hatten said Williams had agreed to transfer there.
Then, late Wednesday night, Hatten said Williams was no longer headed his way because he ''failed to reach some stipulations,'' even after Coker said he gave Williams a full endorsement.
''They called and asked me, if I were at that school would I take Willie Williams?'' Coker said. 'I said, `Without question I would take Willie Williams if I were at that school.' ''
Two of Williams' UM teammates, linebacker Jon Beason and quarterback Kyle Wright, have said that although they didn't have anything against Williams personally, he would have to earn his way back on to the team.
On Monday, when safety Kenny Phillips heard Williams was transferring to Pearl River, he sounded a bit surprised. Phillips, who won a state title at Carol City with Williams in 2004, said he hadn't spoken with Williams in a while. Same with UM defensive end and former Carol City teammate Eric Moncur.
''Everybody wishes he would stay,'' Phillips said. ``But since he's leaving, everybody wishes him the best.''
Williams, a redshirt sophomore, still has a scholarship to UM and can attend classes, which begin Aug. 23, if he registers and shows up in time. With classes starting soon around the nation, the likelihood of Williams playing this season is dwindling fast.
