Danica Patrick - Unfair Advantage? [NSFW]

Danica Patrick made history by finishing fourth in the Indy 500 this past weekend...but a lot of her peers aren't too impressed. In fact, many are saying she has an unfair advantage.

Unlike NASCAR, where driver weight is taken into consideration for total weight requirements, the weight isn't included in Indy racing. In Indy racing, the car must weigh 1525 pounds before the fuel and driver are added.

When you load it up with fuel, cars should all still be about equal. However, when you put a 200 lb man in the car, and put 100 lb Danica in the other, she now experiences a 100 lb advantage. 100 lbs you say -- what's the difference?

Consider that for qualifying, they try and make you "run out of gas" by the end because any excess fuel could slow you down. If they're worried about 5 or 6 lbs of fuel ruining your qualifying, imagine 100 extra lbs over 200 laps, etc.

I think its more of a personal problem to the other drivers not her problem. If its not taken into consideration then the other drivers should be complaining to the league about driver weight not to the press.

There have been other small racers before. I don't care either way as i think racing is incredibily boring to watch in person and on tv. I agree though, it should be dealt with internally.

Like horseracing, the drivers could all be midgets that weigh 100 lbs.

Well I'm not much of a racing fan, in fact, I had never seen the Indy 500. However, since I was at the track a week before the race (business trip :) ) I thought it would be pretty cool to watch, so for the first time ever I watched the last 100 laps. To me it seems that luck and the machine you have under you have a lot to do with the outcome. Some cars are not up to par with the "Big Boys", and Danica is lucky to be driving one of the better cars. Of course luck has a lot to do with it, your timing of the pit stops and your crew's pit time, and the traffic you run into. I just have a hard time believing that weight of the driver is that big of an issue. From what I saw, she is a hell of a driver with an excellent team, they took a calculated risk and didn't fuel up when other did, as a result she pretty much ran out of gas and this cost her the victory, that was just the luck of the draw IMHO. I would guess that if they added weight to the cars to make everyone equal, she would still be a top driver, her car and team give her that advantage. Seems a little petty to me that Gordon said this when he drives NASCAR and wasn't even in the race. We are all intellegent people here :rolleyes: , when he says something to the effect, "I was talking about the rules not Danica specifically", come on how did you think it was going to be interpreted. For the record, if weight makes that much of a difference, how come the male drivers aren't all on weight watchers :p , sorry guys I'm not buying this argument, make all things equal and she is still a hell of a driver, and the outcome of this race would not have been altered much if at all. Just my two cents.
