It's the fourth week of April, which means, naturally, it's time to start forecasting the 2006 Heisman race. And just like the battle for the national title, the competition for the stiff-armed statuette is as wide open as a receiver in the 2005 Texas A&M secondary.

Even though that hurts, it's really funny.

I think it will come down to Quinn, Peterson and a suprise player that really has a breakout year.

Jamaal Charles for heisman? Give me a break. That has got to be one of the funniest things i've seen in forever.

Yeah, when was the last time Texas had a Heisman trophy candidate?

Sheesh, what's it been, months?

Charles is strong, fast and slippery. AJ Hawk thought he was a bad ass.

Then again, AJ thought Vince was too and we know how that turned out.

the one thing that will make charles look good (and a pretty big reason he will be an early canidate) is the sips will be relying on their running game pretty heavily so he should put up some stats.

Vince placing 2nd in the Heisman votes. That's how that turned out. Ok so he's strong fast and slippery, but if he wasn't wearing burnt orange every saturday, he wouldn't be a candidate. It's definately funny to me that the media supposedly has no bias, but a guy who ran for 878 yards in his first season is a heisman candidate, but when C-Lew ran for over a thousand yards his freshman year, he wasn't a heisman candidate.

That is a very good point texag005...I will admit that Charles is a good back though.

All he has to do is run for another 800 yards, wear chili throw up orange, and stay out of jail and ITS AWWWNNN!! :)

The Heisman is just like any other MVP type award.....Best player on a really good team. C-Lew rushed for 1000 yards on a bad team so did not get any consideration the next year because A&M was expected to be bad.

Not exactly. Omar Jacobs and DeAngelo Williams got preseason Heisman hype last year, and I wouldn't consider Memphis or Bowling Green to be "really good teams."

At least bowl-caliber teams, and lets face it, they were dark horses at best. No one really thought they would win. I think those guys get some hype just to stir up conversations and make things more interesting.

The reason why not is that your program doesn't have recent history of developing guys into full fledged Heisman candidates. What has happened to C-Lew since his first year?

Look at Reggie and Vince. Reggie started far ahead of Vince and until the Rose Bowl game against Michigan probably still was. . .then Vince took off.

The bottom line is that for all everyone talks about a lack of player development at Texas, Mack does a remarkably good job of actually developing his players, be they running backs or whatever.

Charles wasn't even close to being the featured back this year (much like a former Longhorn HT winner his early years, Ricky Williams) and he still had a great season. As he develops into the position with more carries he's going to be good.

We don't play good defenses this year, either.

yep, did a great job of developing simms and applewhite. simms has had some very good training at NFL level though. and yep, and look at ricky now.

BUT, i'm not in this conversation because i hate t-sips.

How is he responsible for what happened to Ricky in the NFL? Did he not win the Heisman or was I just dreaming that?

Simms has been the only one he didn't develop well.

you must be just dreaming that.

That jab was uncalled for, don't you think?

and I'm going with brady quinn as early favorite.

CaliHornia

Mack thought Simms was the better player. I'd seen both play and agreed.

They both couldn't play at once and rotating them would have been a bad idea.

BTW, Massacre, why are you so bitter?

The Massacre

It's going to be up to Michigan to put ND on it's ass early. Carr better have the program back in gear this fall.

Lest we not forget, Vince lost by the BIGGEST margin EVER in the Heisman Trophy Balloting.
