You are right, but that just sounds crazy. It reminds me of when I heard about pirates attacking a cruise ship a few years ago. Its just hard to believe that you still have to worry about pirates & gypsies in 2006!

If nothing else you could always go to the Trevi Fountain. It's really impressive but can get quite crowded.

The first time I went to Italy I remember being told OVER AND OVER by my family (they're from Italy) to make sure not to catch any flying babies.

The gypsies will get pregnant just so they have a baby to throw (mainly targetting Americans). They play off Americans' compassion and value of life, especially a baby's life, and when you go to catch the baby-of course making your hands full-they jump you and take whatever you have. A family friend of ours had this happen to him. He's a big guy in really good shape and he wasn't even able to shake them.

so you'd let the baby drop before you'd get robbed?

and they'll do this in front of everyone or what?

Basically they know Americans are likely not to drop a baby because life is more important than things.
They do it in public...everything is so corrupt over there. Totally speculation, but I wouldn't be surprised if the gypsies even paid off the police.

Rome is like any other major European city. Basically, don't get off by yourself in the city. Stay close to the areas that are well lit and try to use a taxi if possible. If you are staying at a hotel, ask them to help you out with places to go and have them get a taxi for you (they should know the reputable cabis in the city).
My wife and I went there almost 8 years ago but we were pretty poor and really didn't get to enjoy Rome fully (not that we are still not poor). The Vatican is beautiful even if you are not Catholic. Enjoy!
