Preston Wilson hit his first HR as an Astro as they put up 4 in the 1st. But Backe didn't get the start, Wandy did. Anyone know why Backe was scratched?

Sweet...maybe I jumped the gun on saying the Wilson signing was bad.

If after 1 or 2 games into the season you say any signing was a bad one -- then you definitely jumped the gun...considering baseball is a 162 game season.

True...but if you watched any of the games he was swinging at anything. It wasn't pretty. Maybe I was just mad at the offense in general. They had a good night tonight though.

What if I thought it was a bad signing from the day it was announced--on the sole fact that the guy strikes out more than '06 does with sober chics.

A strike-out isn't worse than a pop-up or a ground out to 2nd which is what the Astros get a lot of. If he hits 40 HR and 100 RBI's (not sure about the 2nd part) then the Astros need him and can put up with the strikeouts.

Most of the time that is true Vlyrock. I would rather have a ball in play (pop-up or grounder to second) than a strike out. If the ball is in play, there is always a chance someone might commit an error.

Exactly...make the defense make a play to get you out.

I am not jumping to conclusions on Wilson. Glen Davis was a badass player for Houston back in the day. He K'd all the time, but his power overset it. I think once Wilson gets settled in, he will have a field day at Minute Maid.

Yeah I know it's still early but this whole 2 and 1 on the scoreboard 2 of the first 3 games has me really worried. On a positive note thought Loe pitched badass.

The most Glenn Davis ever struck out in a season was 123 times. He was never over 100 in any other season. Actually, his 2nd highest total is 84. In the seasons that he played close to a full season the lowest total that Preston Wilson has struck out is 107. The most is 187. I don't think the two even compare.

You could argue that the stats aren't comparable because of the changes to the game, the mounds, and the athletes involved.

If your arguing number of HRs for each player then I would give you that since Davis played his home games in the pitcher friendly Dome. But if you are talking SO numbers, the changes in the game favor hitters. Look at HR numbers from the 80s until now. Also, there are more teams now than there were when Davis played, so pitching talent is spread out so less talented pitchers are now pitching in the bigs. You could argue that the stats aren't comparable, but by doing that you would only help my arguement.

I haven't researched the stats...what about games played...did Davis play the same # of games as Wilson?

Dustin00whoop

Its so damn close, that games played don't matter. Its something like 50 or more SOs/year.
