At least he did not change it to #1. Even VY left his number #10.

Yeah that whole switch to #1 should've been a dead give away for us and the attitude Reggie had

Actually, I was all for Reggie at #1. He was the man, and we all told him so. His first year with #1(2004) was his best.

That's all true, and i'm definately not saying he wasn't the man in 04, but it should've tipped us off at attitude issues that eventually reared their ugly heads. Hindsight is always 20/20 too

Yeah, that might be reaching. We want athletes with confidence and who think they can get A&M back on the right track.
If Martellus plays bad the next couple of years, everyone will talk about his attitude problems that we should have seen coming. If he's good, everyone will talk about how someone with his great attitude is exactly what we needed. It's easy to turn on somebody and attack their character(I'm guilty of doing this with Reggie also), but there are more factors at work than we'll ever know.

There is a difference between being confident & even cocky & just being plain selfish. Reggie switching to #1 was less about him thinking he was the best & more about who he was looking out for.

The whole Reggie thing is dumb. Maybe the guy just likes #1. I liked wearing #36 as a free safety...what's that say about me? Nothing -- I just wanted to wear #36.
Saying that he chose #1 for any reason to express anything about himself is a stretch.

It says that you thought there were 35 guys on your team that were more important than you. ;)

Actually, in my case...I probably meant better than me. :D

If he was always #1 through HS, I would not have an issue with it. After he changed while at A&M, I did have a problem with it because of the attitude I was beginning to see.

Exactly, HDRV. Just like I don't have a problem with McGee switching to #7. Its not like he is saying he is going to be the next Bucky. Its just always been his number & it became available.

I'm with Vly on this one, most times players just pick a number because they think it is cool for one reason or another, nothing more or nothing less. Stephen switched to 7 because that is what he wore in hs, wonder what Reggie wore at lufkin hs?
On the whole Reggie attitude thing, I think we are all making assumptions. Here is my take on it: there were internal issues on last years team! if you think otherwise you are just being nieve and not looking at what is right in front of you. Now who the players involved were or what the issues were, who knows! at this point who really cares. Everyone is free to make there own assumptions and express them on this site, which is one of the best things about it. From some of the facial expressions and body language I saw and the way the team responded when Stephen was in, do I think Reggie was involved? Yes, I absolutely do. Now what I don't know, is if this was Reggie or Fran at fault. How do I know that Fran didn't put Reggie in situation where Reggie had his back against the wall? How do I know that Reggie didn't do something to piss of Fran? In short I don't know, and I never will. What I do know is something was wrong and both Reggie and Fran chose to take the high road and keep silent about it, and I respect them both for that. Why air the dirty laundry in an already bad situation. So to make a generalization that Reggie wearing number 1 was a sign of a "me only" attitude is just plain wrong. My hope, Reggie kicks ass and takes names on Sundays, and Fran turns this ship around next season. Before I close though, one thing that really bothers me is, folks that look the other way, prentend like nothing was happening, and crucify me or delete threads on anything remotely trying to discuss it, get serious something was going down, but without all the facts in front of me, I'm not going to blame either side.

Rep+ for Phat! now that really made me laugh. I thought the same thing, since it has been a while since he changed numbers. However, you have to have discussions of some sort in the off season. There is baseball, but after listening last night, I wasn't in the mood to discuss.:(
