I don't know how many of ya'll read Byrne's weekly wednesday things, but I was reading last weeks and saw this e-mail of the week about Martellus. I knew he was a good guy but this truly shows the character that he has. Martellus Bennett is a hero, a real one in my book.
During the bedlam following the tu game buzzer, one of the 9-year-old ball boys was knocked to the floor, was stepped on and he lost consciousness. In the midst of the excitement, Martellus was alert enough to notice what had happened, to pick up the child and to carry him to the stands. He quite possibly averted a disaster.
Since Martellus joined the basketball program, I have found him to be a young man who works hard, who has a smile and greeting for everyone, and who is unfailingly polite and even helpful to older women who work at Reed. He always seems willing to share a moment with adoring children—I saw him shooting baskets (even taking turns with the 10-year-olds) during Kid's Court preceding at least one women's game. All of this pales in comparison with his instinctive actions while almost 13,000 people were celebrating.
Count me among his many fans and it has very little to do with his athletic skills.
