View Full Version : Gillespie's Long Term Outlook(?)

What are the chances that Gillespie stays at A&M for more than 3 years?
It seems right now (in both football and basketball) we have coaches who make short stops then go. Gillespie did it at UTEP, Fran at Bama and TCU.
So, are we the top of the totem pole for Gillespie or do you think he's got a good chance of leaving in the near future?
Honestly, as much as I love Texas A&M and Big XII basketball, we're not a powerhouse. I'm afraid that if a school with some basketball history and prestige came and offered a job to Gillespie he may take it.

Offers come to coaches. They will examine them and then make their decision. Same thing goes on in the rest of the world. It's not that big of a deal.
Gillispie is building a program and their isn't per se any tradition that comes as baggage-except losing-that looms over his head.

Give the man what he wants to stay.
I say give him 3 years extension and if he brings us into the NCAA Tournament deep give him a even longer deal.

Money will be no object either.

I agree, give the man the salary and any reasonable improvements to help attract recruits.

Both Coach Fran and Coach Gillispie were able to quickly move up the ranks by getting crappy teams into postseason play. The next level up for both of them (in other words, a school whose prestige is truly a level higher than ours), is a HUGE step.
The next step for both of them is a big one, so it will take a while. I honestly don't see Fran leaving until after at least two conference titles(or getting fired), and I don't see Billy G leaving until at least a sweet sixteen appearance and at least 3 consecutive NCAA bids (or getting fired).
For Billy G, schools like Kansas and Duke aren't just happy with NCAA bids. For Coach Fran, schools like Miami and USC expect more than just consistent non-BCS bowl appearances.

I look like a genius (same with Loftin). BG had a sweet 16 appearance and 2 straight NCAA tourney bids... :wow:

So you two are psychic and have been holding out on us all this time?

I think we should start advertising and promoting that everyone could have heard all the Billy G news here first (and 2 years ago at that). ;)
