Marquette is changing their name to the Marquette Gold.
The change takes place when they leave Conference USA and join the Big East on July 1st.
The change comes after alumni offered money to change the name to Warriors (what it was before 1993). The administration sent out ballots on what it should be....Golden Eagles or Warriors.
Then, all of a sudden, they announce the Marquette Gold. Since when did having a color as your nickname "in". It's retarded. It's going to be like 4th grade PE where you have red vs blue. Or Orange team vs White.
Stick with the nicknames. There was nothing wrong with Golden Eagles.

There was nothing wrong with Warriors either. Unless you were some kind of overly touchy feely sensitive idiot.
What a bunch of morons.

Apparently, the students disliked Gold so much that they got the Regents to listen and put it up to a 10-choice vote.
It's down to Hilltoppers and Golden Eagles (the "current" name)
Names that lost:
Blue and Gold
Explorers
Golden Avalanche
Golden Knights
Saints
Spirits
Voyagers
Wolves
The vote runs until June 24th...

The original name, "Warriors" is what 99% of students and alumni want. They changed to Golden Eagles in the 90s, because "Warriors" is supposedly offensive to Inidans. The reason they changed to "Gold" in the first place was at graduation the almni who spoke offered the school $2 million out of his own pocket if they changed back to Warriors. They took it more as a hate for Golden Eagles than a love for Warriors. They are adamant about not making it Warriors, though.

Warriors is a noble name. Not something offensive to Indians. Jeez, you want to be sensitive to Indians, don't have an Indian logo. Simple. Warriors cross the spectrum of time and place in all cultures. If they want to be politically correct, have Warrior as the nickname and an Amazon as the logo.

That is how I feel.
Side Note: I am 3/16 Native American (Choctaw) and none of the names (Warriors, Indians, Redskins, Braves) offend me. I could understand people opposing "savages," but other than that none of the names are offensive.
It's only a matter of time until "Vikings" offends Norwegians. Besides, why are team's names offensive? Shouldn't that be an honor? If it's bad to have a team named after you, then would "Nazi's" or "Terrorists" be acceptable? I swear, nothing but animal names or inanimate objects are acceptable these days.
