Basketball Tips Off Sunday
When was the last time that College Station was buzzing about basketball? It hasn't been anytime recently, I can assure you of that much. Just 2 seasons ago, Texas A&M struggled through an 0-16 conference schedule which eventually led to the removal of Coach Melvin Watkins as head coach. Enter Coach Billy Gillespie. Coach Gillespie came to A&M from UTEP and brough with him a change in attitude. A&M responded in his first season, reaching post-season play and advancing to the third round of the NIT Tournament.
The leader of the team, Antoine Wright, a Jr. forward, became the first Aggie in a long time to be drafted in the first round of the NBA draft when New Jersey selected him at #15. The team enters this season sans Antoine Wright, but with a boat load of expectations, and young talent to back it up. The team has obvious goals for this season. To win/compete for the Big XII crown. To be playing in March in the "real" NCAA Tournament. Just as important, and probably serving the same goal, they look to win their first Big XII Tournament game. Joseph Jones, Acie Law and other returners look to show the rest of the Big XII that last year wasn't a fluke.
The season tips off Sunday at 7 PM in College Station where the Aggies welcome the Southern Jaguars to Reed Arena. Get out there and join the Reed Rowdies in making Reed just as intimidating as Kyle for opponents. BTHO Southern!November 14, 2005 - AggieFans.com News (http://aggiefans.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=23.php?)
