ESPN is reporting that he made racist comments about one of his players to them.
1. He don't don't play like a n***** (meaning he's not lazy in the context of what he said)
2. There are honkies and white people, and black people and n*****s. He's a good black guy.

Here's a link to an article on ESPN:
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=2050124
Cochell was speaking with play-by-play announcer Gary Thorne when he called Dunigan over to praise him for staying in school. When the freshman returned to the field, Cochell told Thorne, "There's no n----- in him." The network informed the school that Cochell used similar language in an interview with ESPN analyst Kyle Peterson.

Thats was very stupid to say to ESPN it might not be such a big deal if he had said it to a local reporter but saying it to ESPN is really stupid.

That was an incredibly stupid thing to say. You have to wonder about this guys level of intelligence, what was he thinking? What exactly did he think was going to happen? Not only did he disgrace himself, he also disgraced the university of Oklahoma. Not good bull. :o He should go find Jimmy the Greek (if he is still alive), they would get along fine

It cost him his job. He resigned yesterday. How sad...one stupid comment like that and you've thrown your whole career away...
"As I have said in a public statement, I deeply regret that I carelessly used language that is clearly contrary to the basic values of our university," Cochell said in the letter released by the school. "Those words also created an impression contrary to my own personal values and my respect for all people. ... I do not want to be the cause of any person having a mistaken impression about our university."

Stupid for him to say it, smart move to go ahead and resign.

The funny/sad thing is that he was trying to pay the player a compliment. It's been all over the news here in OKC. Must be nice to be in Texas where the media is not pumping ou sunshine all the time. Bet you all get that for TX though.
Anyway, yes, he resigned over the comments (Daily OUklahoman article (http://www.newsok.com/article/1488174/?template=sports/ou)).
Joe Dunigan Sr., the father of the Sooner freshman baseball player, declined to comment. Charles Caufield, the father of Oklahoma's other African-American player, Chuckie Caufield, said he was in "shock."
"I hate for anybody to lose their job," Charles Caufield said. "It's kind of shocking to me."
The Caufields and Dunigans had previously said they forgave Cochell for his comments and did not want to see him lose his job.
Although Cochell had not been around the program since Friday, he believed the players might have seen the writing on the wall. Sophomore Ryan Mottern said he had "no clue" the resignation would come Sunday.

Honestly, in a situation like this, I'd like to see the player it was directed to have a say in it. Obviously, the player wasn't offended...he forgave him. Let the man keep his job, and chalk it up to lesson learned. He obviously wasn't a flat out racist in the longer room.
The comments may have been made in jest or something like that. If the player says don't worry about it, I'd be fine with him keeping his job.
