Win First Road Game of 2005

Even a scripted start by Coach Fran couldn't have started better for the Aggies than they did in this game. A quick 3 and out for the Wildcats, followed by a pass interference, then personal foul against K-State, gave the Aggies their first official snap at the Wildcats 27. Reggie McNeal took care of business quick, faking the handoff then scampering 27 yards to put the Aggies up 7-0. Reggie would finish with 119 yards on the ground, becoming the first 100 yard rusher allowed by the Wildcat defense this year. Another quick possession by K-State, saw A&M take over inside Wildcat territory. The drive was flawless and eventually capped by a 2 yard TD run from Jorvorskie Lane. Lane started his first game for the Aggies Saturday -- and had this to say about finally getting a chance to play meaningful minutes and start.

“It’s a very big change. I was frustrated at first but that’s kind of normal for a freshman. I use to call home and call my Uncle Larry all the time and he just told me to stay focused, stay focused and it’s paying off right now. I just thank the Lord that I’m playing and pray that I stay healthy cause if I stay healthy I think we will win more ball games.”

A&M drove the field again on their next possession and after failing to convert on a 3rd and 1, lined up for a FG to put them up 17. Coach Fran had other ideas though, as he called for a fake. K-State was ready though and forced Schroeder out of bounds without ever getting the pass off. The call didn't hurt too much though as K-State had their punt blocked into the end zone for the safety. Several Ags had chances at it, but failed to recover it. The score was 16-0 with a little over 7:00 to go. It only took 1:40 for K-State to answer, as Everidge connected with Yamon Figurs for a 52 yard TD. K-State went for 2 and got it, making the score 16-8 which carried over to the half.

Half the 3rd quarter went by until the Aggies put together a long drive, finalized with a 5 yard TD pass to Schroeder. The Ags sat comfortably at 23-8 with 7:30 to go in the 3rd. It wasn't enough though, as K-State came roaring back in the 4th quarter. A special teams miscue by A&M allowed the crack the Wildcats need to break back into the game. Brantley had a punt blocked inside the end zone that the Wildcats recovered for a touchdown. After a quick 3 and out, the K-State Wildcats could smell a comeback. Facing a 4th and 1, Alan Everidge hit Morreira for a 42 yd Touchdown pass to pull K-State within 2, 23-21. Lining up in shotgun for the 2 point conversion, Jolly busted through the line and stopped the option in the back field.

Leading 23-21, the Aggies needed an answer to this up-start K-State team. They got it in an 8 play, 76 yard drive that ate up 3:54 from the game clock. Lane barreled in for his 2nd touchdown of the day and the Aggies led 30-21 with 4:18 remaining. K-State drove down the field but couldn't do so quickly. Only having one time-out, they finally scored a TD with 1:18 to play. Jordy Nelson caught a 5 yard pass by the sideline and appeared to be out of bounds. The refs called it in, and the call was upheld by a replay from the booth. Trailing 30-28, K-state was forced to go for the onside kick. The kick was high and fielded cleanly by Schroeder. The Aggies were able to run the clock out and escape Manhattan with the win.

Senior Quarterback Reggie McNeal had this to say after the game. “This was a huge win. We were 0 and 2 on the road and everyone was suspect about us winning on the road so we had to come out and prove we could when and we did.” This win ups the Aggies to 5-2 on the season (3-1 in Big XII play) and makes next weeks Iowa State game at Kyle a big one. A win gets them bowl eligible. With Oklahoma, Tech and Texas remaining on the schedule, it's important to get that hurdle out of the way.

The Aggies kick off at 2:30 PM and the game will be televised regionally on ABC.October 22, 2005 - AggieFans.com News (http://aggiefans.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=23.php?)
