OK, so I read this ESPN article that explained it, so here goes:

Notre Dame is guaranteed a BCS-bid if the finish 9-2 and have a BCS ranking of #12 or better. Right now, they are ranked #16. Some of these teams will lose, but Notre Dame has to jump up four places.

Notre Dame's remaining games are: BYU, Tennessee, Navy, Syracuse and Stanford. If Notre Dame beats UT, that pretty much guarantees that they will have a 9-2 record. There is no doubt that Notre Dame will be top 12 in the human polls, but the BCS computers will decide it. Right now, the BCS computer rankings have Notre Dame no higher than #22. With four of their last five games being against crappy teams, SOS could kill Notre Dame's BCS ranking, especially since margin of victory doesn't count.

Starting next year, Notre Dame(or any mid-major conference champ) will be guaranteed a BCS bid if they finish ahead of any BCS conference champ with an automatic bid in the BCS rankings. This year, they are 1 spot ahead of Big East leader West Virginia in the BCS poll, which is all they will need next year.

F N.D. They shouldn't get special treatment because they refuse to join a conference. I hate them.

I've always chucked at myself, because I'm as Catholic as they come, and I do not like N.D. For the same reasons as Dustin, the special treatment gets old, aren't they part of a conference in BB but not football?, I think that is right, it just rubs me the wrong way. I do however root for Boston Colllege! :gig:

I think ND's BCS bowl eligibility should be solely determined by it's BCS ranking. If you not in a conference you don't get a an automatic in, it should be as simple as that

I agree. I understand that Notre Dame is a historic program, but I don't understand why they still have so much clout. Let me ask -- is this just a Notre Dame rule, or does it apply to all 1-A Independents? (I think there's only 2-3 total)

I mean technically, being a 1-A independent would be a better situation because you can schedule all 11 of your games and control who's at home and who you play away. If it's just a Notre Dame rule, I'd like to see the other Universities file a lawsuit for discrimination or something to get that rule overturned.

Good question Vly. For some reason, I think that this rule only applied to ND. Maybe it applied to all, but we don't know b/c Army will never win 9 games.

Army, Navy and Temple will have a combined winning % under 20. So I don't know about whether that is for all independents or not, but it's irrelevant.

Starting next year, Notre Dame will have the same rules as any team that wins a mid-major conference. If they finish BCS ranked ahead of an automatic bid, they also get an automatic bid. Last year, with those rules, we would have had 9 teams with an automatic BCS bid, and Texas would have been in the Cotton Bowl.

Let's face it, the BCS doesn't work.

The BCS has never worked, never will work and is an absolute joke. Scrap it. Bring back some the old traditional bowl tie-ins in some fashion or give me a playoff.

Hell, just arguing who ought to be National Champs was always a lot of fun. Seeing teams like Utah and Auburn screwed out of the opportunity to play for the National Championship just sucked. What if Utah and Auburn had played each other in the Sugar Bowl? Would the media be calling it the Third Place Game?

Totally ridiculous.
