Miers, whom Bush called a trailblazer for women in the legal profession, said she was humbled by the nod.

"If confirmed, I recognize I will have a tremendous responsibility to keep our judicial system strong and to help insure the court meets their obligations to strictly apply the laws and Constitution," she said.

Democratic and Republican special interests groups had been braced for a political brawl over the pick, but they may not get it. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had urged the president to consider Miers, according to several officials familiar with Bush's consultations with Congress.

I was also a little surprised by this. She has no judicial experience.

I think the jury is still out on her in my book. I don't know much about her, except she was on the Dallas City Council and that GW brought her in to clean up the lottery when he was governor. I'm sure we're all about to find out more than we need to know about her in the confirmation hearings.

The jury is still out with me as well.

She is a good nominee for what Bush was trying to accomplish--somebody that is a bit unknown without a judicial record to evaluate. If his opponents are going to criticize her on how she would rule on something, they'll have to dig deep on research. I think he is trying to avoid people digging through every ruling an experienced judge has made.

My gut feeling is that this may backfire as he has people that normally support him questioning her experience. In trying to kill partisan criticism he may have successfully killed his support system for the nomination as well.

When Reed likes her, and Schumer was standing at a podium dumbstruck, but with a twinkle in his eye, something is wrong.
If you can't find a candidate that pisses off these two at least, along with Kennedy, Durbin, Pelosi, etc. Then you did not look closely enough. During the last election cycle GWB said he would, if given the opportunity, move the SC back to the right, more conservative.

I'm filing this one under the apple don't fall far from the tree. (Read my lips, No New Taxes)
