PHOENIX – Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione said he would like to start some discussion among Big 12 officials about hosting the league's annual championship game in Norman, Okla.

Or perhaps Austin. Maybe College Station, Texas. Or anywhere else in the Big 12.

Castiglione said if the Big 12 must keep playing a football championship game beyond 2007 when the current TV contract expires, athletic directors should consider dumping neutral sites and allowing the team with the best conference record an opportunity to host the championship.

Castiglione's idea is still percolating in his own mind, and even he admits that this idea would need more thought. Since the Big 12's current contract with ABC runs through the next three years, the earliest anything could happen is 2008.

But Castiglione feels strongly enough about the concept that he plans on pitching it to Big 12 officials sometime soon – hopefully at the league's upcoming meetings in late May.

"Purely from a thought-provoking position, it's worthy to review the idea of a conference championship game and its value to our teams," Castiglione said Tuesday while attending the Bowl Championship Series meetings at the Royal Palms Resort and Spa. "Let's look at the alternatives."

Some Big 12 coaches are openly against North and South divisions. But if the Big 12 must keep them, Castiglione proposes the team with the second-best league winning percentage – regardless of division – serve as the visitors in the championship game.

I understand his logic, but I don't think it's a good idea. The reason being is that head-to-head, those teams most likely haven't played. The North plays all the North teams, the South all the South.

If the North has a weaker division and say, Kansas State, goes undefeated in conference, then beats Baylor and Oklahoma State...(avoiding powerhouses Texas, OU, A&M, and Tech)

While the Ags win the Big 12 south, but lose one game to OU and beats other weak Big 12 North opponents.

Why should A&M be put at a disadvantage for coming out of a harder division of the Big 12? A&M may have a much better team, which is why the field should remain neutral.

The only way to justify having home-field advantage in a Big 12 Championship game is if all teams play all the other 11 ones. That way the records actually reflect the strength of the teams relative to all the other ones.

What do you think?

He clearly just wants it that way to advantage himself. He is thinking, "hmmmm if we hosted in Norman and the crowd was all Sooners and the team played on their home field we might not get our ass kicked by a north division also-ran like Kansas State kicked our ass in 2003."
Thats a real bad, real unfair idea. Whats the point of the championship game then?

Its an idea, but its a bad idea at that.

Exactly. He is tired of playing an away game rather then a home game for the CG.

Either way, it shouldn't fly with everyone else.
