PHOENIX – Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione said he would like to start some discussion among Big 12 officials about hosting the league's annual championship game in Norman, Okla.
Or perhaps Austin. Maybe College Station, Texas. Or anywhere else in the Big 12.
Castiglione said if the Big 12 must keep playing a football championship game beyond 2007 when the current TV contract expires, athletic directors should consider dumping neutral sites and allowing the team with the best conference record an opportunity to host the championship.
Castiglione's idea is still percolating in his own mind, and even he admits that this idea would need more thought. Since the Big 12's current contract with ABC runs through the next three years, the earliest anything could happen is 2008.
But Castiglione feels strongly enough about the concept that he plans on pitching it to Big 12 officials sometime soon – hopefully at the league's upcoming meetings in late May.
"Purely from a thought-provoking position, it's worthy to review the idea of a conference championship game and its value to our teams," Castiglione said Tuesday while attending the Bowl Championship Series meetings at the Royal Palms Resort and Spa. "Let's look at the alternatives."
Some Big 12 coaches are openly against North and South divisions. But if the Big 12 must keep them, Castiglione proposes the team with the second-best league winning percentage – regardless of division – serve as the visitors in the championship game.
