Selling Jason White isn’t supposed to be hard.
Heisman winner. Heisman finalist. Almost 8,000 passing yards and 81 touchdowns. A 27-4 record as a starter at Oklahoma. And a career 63 percent completion rate.
Still, James “Bus” Cook, White’s agent, can’t find a buyer. One day after White became only the fourth Heisman winner not to be selected in the NFL Draft, Cook worked the phones in search of a free agent deal.
“All 32 teams,” said Cook, White’s agent. “We have called Kansas City. We have called Dallas. We have done everything we could to get this kid signed. But there is just not a whole lot of interest right now.”
So White must sit, wait and watch. And there was some watching to do Monday.
Several undrafted quarterbacks such as Chad Friehauf from Colorado Mines and Lang Campbell from William and Mary signed free-agent deals.
“I’ve been in business a long time and this has got to be the most surprising thing that has happened,” said Cook.
White did not return calls Sunday or Monday to comment on his future.
One NFL scout agreed with White’s agent.
“I was surprised he didn’t at least get picked up as a free agent,” the scout said. “I can’t explain it. I’ve seen a lot worse fourth arms in camp.”
