Which would be the better hire at the end of this season?

Mike Leach or Skip Holtz? State your case, I have mine(and don't use the: 'I just want Leach gone' deal)

Leach to get his ass out of the Big 12.

Mike Leach... but only because Tenn has shown in the last 3 seasons that they will schedule more than FIU, & a bunch of D-1AA programs.

Tenn plays teams like Cal & UCLA...

That offense he runs at ttu, will suffer dearly without a Fluff Schedule.

And it will help A&M. ;)

Tennessee takes Holtz because he can flat coach and seems to feild a pretty salty defense ... something needed in the SEC.

Then Leach jumps over to East Carolina because he's always wanted to be a pirate! ;)

I've got Leach as the UT hire simply because...the spread CAN work in the SEC. This hire will be in response to Urban Meyer...but how will the Vol's feel about a lackluster scheme on D? Recruiting would be interesting though. He's never been a strong recruiter but he essentially has the state to himself and would eventually protect his in-state recruits from the national programs(Michigan, tOSU, USC, Florida) and some from his own conference(LSU, Georgia, Ole Miss)

Kinda surprised no one has tossed out any other names on here, but this is where I see this coaching search going. I think Leach would take this job...it's about the same prestige as a job compared to UCLA(even moreso, IMHO)

am I missing something? is TN looking for a new coach?

WesTxAg
09-08-2008, 03:46 PM
yes, just like BB looked for a new coach after Fresno State & Miami last year

neither.... if they do make a move it will need to be to a big name (a la saban and alabama). both of those guys are good coaches but to keep up in the sec they need a bigger name.

Holtz. He's done amazingly well at a school that used to be a doormat in C-USA.

Obviously, I'd love to see Leach gone so A&M can go back to beating Tech regularly, but his offense would struggle in the SEC. Look at that Cotton Bowl a couple of years ago.

Both of those names are about as big as Urban Meyer's name was at Utah before he came to UF.

Just think at Tenn Leech would be able to recruit 4 and 5 star talent and that's scary.

On the plus side for Leach and Tennessee ... they do have the Vol Navy tradition ... the pirate shtick could still work for him there. ;)

Maybe Tenn could take Fran.

the answer is none of the above...TN will stick w/ Fulmer. He will win just enough to keep his job, again.

but he will still be fat.

I heard about that on Local Radio.... the Local folks believe 100% that Bama would reach down to the bottom of their pockets to keep Saban where he is.. ESPECIALLY to keep him from going to another SEC school...

It was a HUGE point of convo... Some local yocalls even called in "ALL CLAIMING" to know the big money folks around the Bama program, saying they know 1st hand that Bama would do everything to keep Saban.

You can take Skip Holtz name off the Tenn. list. Mark my words: Charlie Weiss will be fired and Notre Dame will name Holtz as their next head coach.

I'm sure they can't afford (don't want to afford) Weiss' buyout...they gave him that ridiculous contract a couple years ago

remember ND also fired Willingham with the hopes of bringing Urban Meyer back....they didn't go as planned for them

skip holtz to UT because he can recruit and coach, while fulmer can jsut recruit and not coach haha and leach is his offense coordnator;)

I would go with neither here. Not because of Leach's spread but because in the SEC recruiting is the name of the game and that traditionally has not been Leach's strong suit.

I think Tenn goes defensive focus with a big name and bring in a hot young o coordinator.

No matter what happens Fulmer will still be fat.

Fran could work at Tenn. Now the question is if hired does he get shot when his team goes to Bama?

Hold the phone for a minute! Have you ever been to Lubbock? You could take the best recruiter in the world & he would not be able to recruit a bunch of 4 & 5 stars to Lubbock. And with that being said, Leach has done an excellent job of getting kids to come there that fit his system & has made them successful. He probably has done more with less than the most coaches in the nation. I think if you give him a big time program to recruit to he could bring in some big time talent.

Burnetaggie99

I agree Dustin :rep: Thats why I said earlier if you give Leech a school like Tenn he will get the recruits and would win big. He got them to go to OU when he was OC.

I heard something on the Colin Cowherd (sp) show that I've been thinking about for a few days...essentially he said that the New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys (at least last year) were built for the regular season...meaning they lead the league in all kinds of stats but in the playoffs are destined to fold because they couldn't do what it takes in the playoffs.

I kind of feel that way about Leach and his 9-4 seasons. He dominates most of the teams he should, loses to one a year he shouldn't and gets smacked down by more athletic and/or physical teams.
He can't win dog fight type games and I simply don't see that changing regardless of talent because he won't feed the rock to a RB enough to stick close in those types of environments and unfortunately that is exactly what he will have to do week in and week out in the SEC.

I feel the same way about Mizzou as well...and it's not a spread thing as we all know Florida with Tebow can win the nasty game and other teams that have a bit more balance do the same thing.
Net Net I just don't think Leach is a good fit there...I think he works best at a school where 9-4 with an occasional upset and a ton of passing yards is acceptable...that is not the case at Tennessee.

I see the DC at tu as the prime canidate...

If you remember Leech was very balanced in his spread offense at ou and has even gone on record and said if he ever got a great RB at tech he would lean more to being balanced.

Mezentius
09-23-2008, 11:04 PM
His best NFL player is a back up RB at Tech...of course that should change with Crabtree and maybe their QB.

At OU Stoops was the HC and has always been a fan of balance...he hasn't been close to balanced at Tech so I have to go with what I've seen which is an absolute aversion to the run as a consistent part of the offense.

Kines essentially ignored the run in the Cotton Bowl for example...essentially begging tech to run and Leach stuck right on his season avg of rushes and yards

Again I think he is in the perfect place at Tech. .
