Field Goals Too Much To Overcome
September 3rd, 2005 was a day many Aggie fans couldn't wait for. The start of a new season...the time to realize one's expectations weren't overhyped and the Ags would show it in true form as the Aggies marched into Clemson. Instead, September 3rd turned into a day many aggies wish they could forget.
The Aggies fell Saturday to a highly underrated Clemson Tiger team. Coming into the game, many in the media and fans around the nation, didn't know what to expect from the revamped Tigers. Playing in front of a national audience, it was revealed that the Tigers of Clemson are for real this year.
Led by freshman James Davis, who rushed for a game high 101 yards, the Clemson Tigers controlled the pace of the game and held the highly touted Aggie Offense in Check. On the final drive of the game, James Davis carried the ball 8 consecutive times, the most for any Tiger since 1997. His running, combined with the record setting day by kicker Jad Dean (who went 6-6 in field goals) led to a 1 point victory over Texas A&M, 25-24.
Amazingly, the Aggie defense didn't give up a touchdown. However, as mentioned, Dean hit 6 field goals, and a punt return for a touchdown was enough to doom the Aggies who couldn't seem to get their defense off the field.
After the game Reggie McNeal said the loss doesn't damage the Aggies. After all, they lost to Utah to open the season then rallied to win seven of their next nine games.
"We can do that again," McNeal said. "We can do better than that because we've got more experience."
Texas A&M gets a week off to prepare for their home-opener against the SMU Mustangs on September 17th. SMU is coming off a 28-23 loss to Baylor and will play TCU at home this upcoming Saturday.
