Gotta Be The Shoes

Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne has held an annual "state of the program" discussion with Aggie fans throughout his tenure. More than 1,200 people turned out for Byrne's most recent session earlier this month.

One of the most intriguing questions asked his reasoning for the Aggies' move last year from Nike to adidas as the department's primary apparel provider.
The San Antonio Express-News reported that Byrne detailed a meeting with a Nike representative in which he requested a similar deal as A&M's major rival, Texas.
Byrne said he was offended when the Nike official told him, "You're not as good as they are and you're probably never going to be." That blunt assessment, Byrne said, made his move to adidas easier. The adidas deal also provides more money for A&M than their Nike offer, Byrne said.

Hmmmmm, maybe thats why we won the last 2 years....:undecided:

im pretty sure he didn't say that in the address and ive also heard conflicting stories with BB denying that ever happening

Calling BS on that one.

Not the fact that we'll never be as good as UT because we probably won't but it's hard to believe a Nike Representative would say that. They pay millions for those school endorsements. They wouldn't burn bridges like that.

Exactly Coolaid. There is no damn way a rep is going to lose a big contract. That sort of stunt guarantees it.

He did say that in the speech, they replayed it on the radio last week so I know that it was in there.

Now whether it's true or not, that I don't know.

Maybe the rep. didn't say it that harshly, but inferred some superiority by tu. People are known to say some stupid stuff and a new rep. may have got fired over it.

Nike is a bitch to work with. There are many teams that have switched from them over various issues ranging from uniform options (I want to say this is why Tceh went away from them) to financial reasons.

Look if an account rep/executive is stupid enough to say that to the president of a university then said company has some serious hiring issues.

Really? Our record has been better than tu's since the late 70's? We play about a dozen games a year, and they all count, not just the home-and-away series with that college in Austin.

Seems they've won a few more conference championships and a national championship in there than we have, but I could be mistaken. Seems their overall record each year is a littl ebetter than ours as well.

Overall, THEY are better right now. If A&M were a better team we'd still have Fran on the sidelines, and Mack would be playing the slots in an airport instead.

This is about your original comment...
Since the late 70's we have proven to be just as good or BETTER than TU.

I'm disagreeing with this post. We may be as good or better in head to head matchups, but we do not have the national titles, conference championships, or bowl wins to say that we are a better team.

I'll apply this same arguement to tech in the last 10-15 years. They may be as good or better in head to head matchups, but they do not have the national titles, conference championships, or bowl wins to say that they are a better team.

Conference championships since the late 70's: A&M- '85, '86, '87, '91, '92, '93, & '98. tu- '81, '83, '90, '95, '96, '05. That's A&M 7 & tu 6. MNC's- tu 1 & A&M 0. Years tu had a better record- 78, 79, 81, 82, 83, 84, 90, 95, 96, 2000-2007 or 17 years. A&M had the better record in 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 91-94, 97, 98, 99 or 12 years. I think in 80 both teams were 4-7.

So in good years people all over the country show their "pride", and in bad years the people of Austin show it... Sounds about right to me, considering the fact that on saturdays in the 90's in the Austin area longhorn orange wasnt out in much force, but throw in some bowl wins and the Wal-mart T-shirts fly off the shelves, only to be rid of when teams like tOSU and Florida start to become more powerful... Austin envys other big cities in Texas because their roads suck, and they dont have their own professional team, so they claim ones from San Antonio, Dallas and Houston, and they have the highest t-shirt fan base in the state...

dont get me wrong, i grew up around Austin... Most of the people are great, and the atmosphere cant be beat, but they have the biggest case of Penis Envy in the state, so they try to pass tu football of as their professional sport... It is not a college town, it is a Large city that wants real sports, as evident by them thinking that the Spurs are from Austin...

I live in Austin, lots of tshirt tu fans for sure, but there are a ton of their exes around. Are there bandwagon jumpers? Hell yes

Umm there are no professional sports teams here so if you are going to be a fan of a "local" team then it will have to be one from Dallas or Houston (San Antonio in the case of the NBA).

Also Austin has doubled in size in the last 15 or so years...It wasn't done with birthrate, there are a ton of transplants. Their kids tend to root for the home team and yes tu sports kidn of takes the place of pro sports (especially with football).

I'm a huge Dallas Stars fan, I guess i have penis envy because Austin doesn't happen to have an NHL team? I mean does that mean that everyone that doesn't live in a metro area with a pro team is the same way?

I will be the first to say that it is amusing for sure to see the orange t shirts abound when the horns win...I just remember the early and mid 90's when I bought some tickets to the T+1 game at HEB for $10 bucks a ticket in the horseshoe...

Im not saying that you cannot root for your favorite texas team... The thing that bothers me is that Austin has seemed to "claim" the Spurs as thier team... Theres always the great "we" won last night, and its like who? The local news is biased towards the spurs as well as the rest of the city, but my point is this only started when the Spurs started winning... NBA wasnt really the talk of the town when they werent winning....

That post was more or less a rant on what I personally dont like about Austin... More or less i was just trying to say how much of a T-Shirt fanbase Austin has...

The loyalty in Austin just bothers me sooooooo much, there are T-shirt fans that will try and shove tu in my face, and these are people that i have know for a long time... It is just annoying that the majority of the tu fanbase comes from people that are in no way even affiliated with the university... Dont get me wrong, i love when you can call a team your own, but be loyal... My Dad and Grandpa are hardcore Horns fans, and tried to put that on me, but i have just always been more of the underdog fan...

Just giving you some hell dude...I totally agree about the tu thing around here for sure. I can't speak to the Spurs thing simply because I'm not a basketball fan at all. One of my good friends is a huge Spurs fan, but I have to say he has been as long as I've known him (before the current salad days they are having).

It does suck not having a pro team in town to root for...of course I was always an Oilers fan and just can't get into the Texans so I'm an NFL mercenary.
