Aggies report: Getting inside
Texas A&M played a competitive game the last time it met UCLA.
The Aggies will get another chance on Saturday when the two teams meet again in the same setting -- albeit in a different tournament -- as they were in a year ago, when the Bruins escaped with a 65-62 victory.
UCLA, then ranked No. 1, defeated the sixth-ranked Aggies last season in the Wooden Classic in Anaheim, Calif.
This year, the teams are part of the West Region of the NCAA Tournament, with the Bruins as the No. 1 seed and the Aggies at No. 9.
Billy Gillispie guided A&M last season, and he is part of an 0-3 A&M record against the Bruins. First-year head coach Mark Turgeon, though, has a victory -- in four tries -- against the Bruins.
If history is an indicator, the game should be close. Along with the three-point loss last season, A&M lost 81-79 to UCLA during the 1961-62 season. Of course, sandwiched in between those two games is a 64-point Bruins victory during the 1971-72 season.
TEXAS A&M 67, BYU 62: Josh Carter hasn't had the most consistent season after leading the nation in 3-point shooting a year ago. Against the Cougars, though, he returned to his former self, scoring 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting -- including 6 of 10 from 3-point range -- to help the Aggies move into the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Carter was one of three Aggies in double figures, though no other A&M player scored more than 11 points.
