it seems to depend on the size/shape of the dogs head. I have a yellow lab with a huge head and he is dumber than a box of rocks in a candy store. But I had a black lab with a slender head that was the smartest dog ever. I have seen it in reverse color too.

My fiancee has a black lab and a yellow lab. The black lab is dumb as can be (he's bigger than the yellow). The yellow one is smaller, and I think semi-evil. I think the yellow one makes the black one do evil things and disobey -- because before the yellow one, the black one was obedient...now, not so much. :D
