Jerry: Owners may opt out of CBA (http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/41230)

Posted: Tuesday February 26, 2008 04:04AM ET

Cowboys (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/6) owner and general manager Jerry Jones believes there is a good chance ownership will opt out of the current labor agreement with the NFL Players Association by the November deadline. Jones did not give the Cowboys (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/6)' opinion of the deal. Several owners, however, such as Denver's Pat Bowlen and New England's Robert Kraft, have expressed dissatisfaction. Twenty-four of 32 votes would be needed to keep the collective bargaining agreement in place. If the owners opt out, the current structure will stay in place through 2010; 2011 would be an uncapped season. NFLPA president Gene Upshaw has said once there is an uncapped year, a salary cap would never return.

And while I don't like Peter King, the salary cap issue could have more to do with this, than anything else....

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/peter_king/02/24/combine/2.html (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/peter_king/02/24/combine/2.html)

Sounds like the United Football League is going to happen in 2009. Prospective UFL commissioner Michael Huyghue told agents the other day it will be an eight-team league (he said six owners, including Mark Cuban, are already in place), beginning in August 2009. The details were sketchy from there, but some agents reported that the minimum salary would be $75,000, the league would go after existing NFL personnel people and assistant coaches to be the league's GMs and head coaches, and the league would try to sign some of the 30th through 43rd players on NFL rosters for slightly more money than they'd make in the big league.

Sure getting rid of the Salary Cap could hurt a few small market teams like Jacksonville & a few other teams, but it would KILL the UFL.....

Thoughts?????

While I used to resent the cap as it pretty much jacks up any real (in my humble opinion) ability for a team to assemble any of the power-house dynasties... then I think of the Pats.. Bleah... Anyway, NOW I think the cap enters a new element to the overall ability to effectively managing a team, or watching it fall to crap...

Seems to me that Jerry Jones is a "quickie" man. He wants what he wants NOW... Wham, bam, thank you ma'am!

Jerry was the one asked about it.... It takes 24 of the 32 owners to make the decision...

Who knows, the Texans Owner might be thinking like Jerry.... :wow:

Removing the salary cap would ruin pro football. 3 or 4 big market teams would hoard all the talent and be contenders for the super bowl every year and everyone else would be playing for scraps. Ticket prices would have to rise to help generate more money for higher salaries. Watching wouldn't be fun anymore.

I think I heard somewhere that if the owners broke the agreement then it would likely bring on another strike. I can't remember the entire thing I just remember someone talking about how Goddell better get it fixed fast. This was about 4 weeks ago.
