Anybody here watch it besides me? If you didn't see it, you missed the best dunk contest in at least a decade. Dwight Howard was phenomenal and Gerald Green had some good stuff, too.

I thought Gerald Green's stuff was weak and overrated....remember the last decade gave us what Vince did, and the Jason Richardson dunks....
I would Dwight's preformace below Vince's and even with or maybe SLIGHTLY above Richardson's

Blowing out the candle was a great dunk.
Vince Carter is the last dunker that I think could be considered better than what Howard is. He won in 1998 or so, which is why I said Howard was the best in at least a decade. Richardson was good, but I don't think he was as exciting or nearly as creative as Howard.
The best of all time was when Jordan and Dominique Wilkins had their rivalry. Since then, there have been some good ones (Spud Webb, Cedric Ceballos, Harold Miner, Vince Carter). The dunk contest has been on a steady decline since Carter won, so I'm glad to see that Howard has revived it. He was great last year, too, and got robbed by the judges.

I think Vince was in 2000 or 2001....I thought the blowing out the candle was VERY overrated.....all these guys can get their heads up by the rim....and it didn't take any extra cordination....I wasn't impressed with it ..

Fair enough, but I think his under the legs dunk in his socks was very underrated. That dunk is a lot more difficult than it looks.

I liked dwight's dunks, but the superman one was not a dunk. He never got to the rim and just got lucky by throwing the ball through the hoop.

Thanks for that! Dwight didn't even dunk it. It was bad. Not even good. He should have tried again.

i mostly agree, but like the announcers said, he was so high he was able to throw it down into the basket, which is a feat itself

I agree that what he did was much harder than a dunk, but it still wasn't a dunk.

I haven't watched the dunk contest in the last few years. It is a shame that the top players do not participate in it anymore. I think the homerun derby is becoming that way too. Both used to be bigger than the allstar game itself, now nobody seems to care.

It varies from year to year in baseball. Sometimes the good players compete, but once they get older they seem to shy away.

Not really. He didn't jump high enough or far enough to dunk it. He was less physical than he needed to be and was forced to throw it in. He got a little lucky, but a dunk would have been MUCH more impressive. It was crap for a dunk contest.

How did he not jump high enough to throw it in? He had to be WAY above the rim to be able to throw it down into the hoop. Either what you are saying is wrong, or he defied the laws of physics (which is even MORE impressive). With that being said, I think he could have fully extended his arm & dunked it if he wanted to.

He threw it in while he was still above the rim. By the time he would have been able to touch the rim he has fallen too far. I can draw a picture, but it ain't worth it. Just watch the video and you can see he came short.

YouTube - Howard's Superman Dunk in Slam Dunk Contest 08
Stop this video at 23 and especially 24 seconds (the side shot) and there is PROOF he was too far out to dunk it. He was already coming down and was just at the point of reach vertically while way too far horizontally. He didn't dunk it and he couldn't at that pont. You also can't float, so take that arguement away. It was clear.
You have to dunk for it to be anything. Especially in a dunk contest. Re-do is called for.

his arm was fully extended when he threw the ball and there is no way he was going to go far enough to dunk it from where he jumped..... i do think it was pretty cool, but i dont consider it a "dunk". it was an over-exagerated lay-up....
