anyone know anything about ricky cavanaugh from austin? he is only a 2 star rated recruit, but it looks like he just took a trip to baylor and is also considering a&m.... he is an OLB and it shows he had 12 sacks as a junior and 21 sacks as a senior. that is absolutely amazing if that is true... it does not show a 40 time, but he has got to be quick to rack up 21 freaking sacks. this may be more of the type of OLB the coaches are looking for and may have something to do with the KLM situation. thoughts?

I read that also.... Seems interesting...
I'm sure the staff knows what they are looking for.... I'm just hoping that 2 star rating is mis-leading..

he has certainly got to be a "sleeper" in this class. there is something with this kid that a few big 12 schools like about him.... how many 2 star recruits only list D-1 schools?

i searched on scout to see if they had any info on this kid and he is no where to be found.... very interesting....

I am just wondering what is wrong with him for him to be a 2 star kid with 21 sacks last year & 12 as a Junior?????

My high school played Austin LBJ in the regional finals this year. I missed that game, but the reports both before and after the game were that their defense was very good and very fast. I think they have an 09 LB that was their star and is a top recruit next year (I'm 85% sure about that). But the overall skill and physical talent of the D was much praised by our coaching staff, fans, and reporters. I think they defensed our star running back (Jacquizz Rodgers) about as well as anyone else did. From what I understand, they shut down the running game pretty well, but we started throwing the ball and won in OT.
http://www.herald-coaster.com/articles/2007/12/03/sports/sports01.txt (write up of the game, but no mention of him).
Regardless the team speed was supposed to be really good, so I assume he's part of that.

well, he was 1st team DE All CenTex and district 17-4A defensive mvp in 2007. he was also 1st team All Centex and 1st Team All District in 2006. i am really wondering why this kid is only a 2 star recruit according to rivals and is not even listed on scout.....

Yeah, I could 2* if he were playing in the middle of nowhere or in 2A or something like that (like Buckley at Palacios, perhaps), but he played for a very good team in a city in 4A and seems to have good measurables (assuming the speed) and put up good numbers. Maybe he's overshadowed by other guys on the team or something.

This was the player that I hinted at in another post. He was big grade risk at the beginning so maybe that could be why the 2 * rating.

at least we can be sure he KNOWS how to get to the QB...has a nose for a sack...:gig:

his high school coach actually has him listed for 24 sacks
got recruited early but teams never offered him because of his grades.
he's expected to qualify
guy probably most like von miller & is known as a great tackler
fellas, i have a feeling we could look back at this sign and say these are the kind of quality finds that we need to imrpove the speed and overall athleticism we crave after a loss like miami

Well 6'2" 215 does seem kinda small for an OLB, even at the highschool level. That could be why for his 2 star rating.

That doesn't seem small at all to me, especially for a quick guy.

Honestly weight doesn't bother me...speed and the lack of it on this team bother me.
I remember folks told R.C. that Aaron Wallace would be a career punt coverage member at best and couldn't lift 225 lbs when he got to A&M.
You can't coach raw speed and quickness....God gives it to you and that's just the way it is.
I'm tired of slow...speed baby speed.
It's easy to get overlooked in Austin...frankly not a ton of talent has come out of this city given its size...I know Brees, and a few others have come out of Austin in the last decade but look at the district that had Sealy, Belleville and Hempstead did in the 80's in comparison to top college talent.....I mean Austin and its metroplex hold two 4A and one or two 5A districts...

I agree. Also, if you look at the 09 OLB that they apparently offered, he, Mahoney, is about the same size (granted, he's a year younger).

I will say this....
Those guys don't fit the 3-4 mold for OLB's... they fit the 4-3 mold more than anything.... Just saying....

Yes, I think that the recent activity in the DE recruiting had more to do w/ other things (like wavering recruits) than a change in scheme.
Pumchavas28
01-22-2008, 04:25 PM
I would agree with that....
While the 3-4 would be interesting... I don't think we have the experience to run that... but a transition to a 4-3 would be far easier to switch to.....
Honestly... I wouldn't mind seeing Dixon moved to a OLB spot & see him used as a Blitzing LB....
Dixon was an awesome Blitzer... so was Miller... Both could be awesome OLB's.... and both hit with a mean streak....:gig:

yeah...that's what I thought...when I think of mean streak/hitting w/ a vengance...I think Von Miller.
If he can keep that attitude & curb the penalties...he will be a worthy weapon.

We are short on OLBs for an obvious reason. And it does seem like we have a lot of guys at the safety spots, so moving a guy down to LB seems very plausible.
As for V Miller, I wonder if they'd move him. Herring seems to want speed at both DE and OLB, and you can't have much more speed at DE than Miller. But we lose Harrington (though he's definitely a different type of DE) and I assume Joiner and some people say Bennet as well. I'd hate to see a promising DE get moved around.

Miller has Safety speed... I don't think he can even have a position really... He's so freakin talented that he could play all but 3 positions on Defense (CB, FS, & DT)....
Kid hits hard, can cover & knows how to find the ball.... But like White said... he needs to control it just a bit.... Having him at both DE & OLB wont be all that bad... JMO....
Works for the Patriots....

I don't know much about Herring's defense, but having a guy like Miller that has the speed to drop into coverage or lock up on a good TE at DE does give you some options.

Guys lets not overlook JC transfer Strong Side DE Matt Moss...He is going to a Hoss for us. Ht: 6-foot-4
Wt: 270 lbs
Forty: 4.7 secs
Bench max: 435 pounds
Now if we could just talk Simi Kuli out of Oregon

I think Simi Kuli is stuck on the ducks....
But I am hoping Moss is a continuation of what Harrington was the last 2 years...
Good thing about Moss is he has 3 years left. :gig:

I thought it was Oregon St? I hope he goes to the Beavers, but I'm partial since guys from my town play or will play there.
As for Moss, I definitely haven't forgotten him or any of our other DEs who look like they might be really good. Just saying that numbers-wise, it might make more sense to move a S to OLB than a DE to OLB.
Does Moss have 3 to play 2 or 3 years of actual football?

He will be listed as a Soph next year.... :gig:
He could very well pan out to be a corner stone of the DL....

as far as coverage skills, Derek Stephens is great for a LB...he grew up playing safety and moved to LB his Sophmore season.....Cy Falls dropped him into coverage alot and has the speed and height to be great at that aspect

LB corps of Stephens and Miller have me pumped...May well be the beginning of the revival of the wrecking crew under the tutelage of Herring...I want us to become Linebacker U again....

Moss has 3 years to play 2. In other words, only 2 years of eligibility left.

He runs a 4.6 forty. Alot of good talent goes unlooked in Central Texas. My guy Bubba Richards was a junior this year who can flat out play is just know getting love from recruiting services but because he's a junior he dosn't get any stars yet or film up on their sights. He has already been to 2 Rival camps and blown some people away. He already has some good schools that have offered. I sure hope A&M gives him a look. He make a great OLB or SS or RB.

I watched Ricky play before. I've watched my school play against his. He is REALLY FAST. Good wrap up tackler too, doesn't miss often, and if he makes a false step he always catches up. I like him. But one player we should start to look at his DEANDRE PERRY out of Bowie High School. (my school). he is 6-4. runs low 4.5. has great jumping ability even though he is class of 2010. he says he might move up to class of '09. He's really good.
