In other news...do female athletes really get pregnant?

JUST KIDDING!!!

Seriously, this is good news that is overdue. There is no reason why an injured player should lose his/her scholly due to an injury.

Were schools really pulling 'ships from pregnant girls? That sounds like it would kill your recruiting.

found this part particularly interesting...

It would protect pregnant athletes and also those struggling with a medical condition such as addiction, eating disorder, mononucleosis or depression. Athletes would not be protected if school policy for all students prohibited premarital sex, for example.

I'm sorry but getting pregnant is NOT the same as getting injured or having mono. There are choices made that can CLEARLY keep you from getting pregnant. These girls are being paid to be athletes, if they get pregnant and therefore, cannot compete, that was their DECISION that THEY should have to live with.

This could effectively DESTROY a womens athletics team by taking up scholarships with studentst that cannot compete. Is it fair to the HS athletes that could be vying for less scholarships on these teams because girls chose to get pregnant instead of playing?

This is not good news thats overdue.
Athletes can currently keep scholarships after being hurt. They are trying to add pregnancy which isn't the same as an injury.

what about "addiction" that presents a HUGE loophole...

You can be clinically addicted to:

drugs
alcohol
sex

Not to mention depression & other psycho (or psycho-somatic) diseases...

I think this makes for an interesting debate...

If you have a academic scholarship & you get in a car accident & lose brain function...(can't make the grade). I'm pretty sure your academic scholarship isn't pulled (it may not be renewed...but not "pulled")...

I don't see this (including pregnancy) as being any different...

If you're injured, you keep your scholarship.. Thats not a decision, others are. Having pregnant girls keep their scholarships sends a bad msg.
Issue is -
Protecting an athlete from something that happens vs something they can control.

I seriously doubt that someone that has a full academic ride scholarship gets to keep it the following semester if they are in bad car wreck. Scholarships are not "pulled" in the middle of a semester. In that case the student would probably lose their scholarship as soon as it was determined that they were not capable of completing the requirements for the scholarship such as minimum gpr's and such.

I think what we're debating is what the term "pulled" actually means.

I may be mistaken as to my understanding...by "pulled" are they saying (example):
1) I'm enrolled for the Fall w/ a soccer scholly. On October 10, I find out I'm pregnant & on October 12, my scholly is "pulled"???

or

2) I'm enrolled for the Fall w/ a soccer scholly. On October 10, I find out I'm pregnant & at the beginning of NEXT semester (January), I no longer have a scholly.

So if a girl on scholly gets pregnant, does she now take up two scholarships??? :)

It is my understanding that they don't change your scholarship status in the middle of a semester, no matter what. I actually don't know of any scholarship that is changed mid semester while students are on it.

So the Pregos get to keep their scholarship, what does that do for the Ragu's?

do you pull the guy's scholarship for getting someone pregnant? No...me thinks doing so to the woman could be considered discrimination.

Is it still possible for the father of the child to play the sport that he is being paid to play? The answer is a resounding YES.

To me this is similar to Vick. Since he made the decision to fight dogs and consequently can't play football this year (or in the near future) he isn't geting paid. Why should a person that can't complete the work they are being paid for, due to a decision of their own, continue to get paid?

If a school has restrictions against premarital sex (like LeTourneau University), then their scholarship should be taken away. However, many of these girls are married or engaged and are starting a family.

Your job can't fire you for getting pregnant, so why should that make you lose a scholarship?

I'm off my game right now. Too much time away from the site and way too much stress right now. Just give me another week or so and hopefully everything will be back to normal.
