that SMU is paying their new coach more than A&M and several others in the big 12?

SMU wants to become relevant again and they have already shown thier boosters are willing to do whatever it takes to win.

SMU is a *HOLE* in college football. IMO it'll be a long, long time before they're "relevant", no matter how much they spend.

but if their boosters are patient and willing to fork over the money to get a good staff. I'm guessing it would pan out in the end. Hell thats the only thing they can do is slowly, and i mean slowly bring the program back around. They needed to hire a good coach, and junes is a good hire for them. Now we just gotta see how he does in a metroplex that is saturated with recruiters from schools with pass happy offenses.

They probably have some money left over from their SLUSH fund, not to mention that's it might have been well invested.

But that is an interesting hire. Imagine the defense when SMU plays North Texas in a few years1

SMU with that offense could very easily turn things around...

With talent FAR, FAR worst than what he had at Hawaii this year, Jones had Hawaii winning 9 games his 1st year at Hawaii after Hawaii had gone 0-11 the year before...

I don't know if 9 wins is in the cards for SMU but I can see them in a Bowl Game next year... That's for sure....

We paid Fran more than that and look what happened.

Paying your coach more != better

It's not like SMU will be recruiting & coaching against Elite BCS competition....

SMU will be facing horrible teams...

SMU is also proof positive of why we are not likely to ever see the Death Penalty again.

In all honest (not at the level of SMU) but A&M has not really recovered from it's 1994 blacked out season....

The kids who were fish that year, carried A&M up till 1998 & since then, A&M has never been the same in recruiting or in the media's eye....

I thought it was odd as well that SMU is paying Jones so much money. Those of us old enough to remember will recall the verbage coming from the school when the "death penalty" expired and they started playing again........the school decided to make football far less of a priority. They moved the games back to the campus, in a newly remolded field that holds 30,000 at max. It's a nice stadium but very small. Over and over again, the adminstration there let it be known that football is not that big of a deal anymore.

Now all of a sudden they're paying their HC a BCS top 25 school salary? Sounds like newer heads are prevailing and they're going to try to bring football back to prominence again. I think part of their motivation is that they've seen what's going on over at their rival's house 40 miles to the west.....a football program growing and a school growing as well.

I also think they realized how much money the football program (a good one) can bring in. Many football programs fund all athletics for universities...they're probably realizing this...

Good call, I agree, in the late 70's they were REALLY relevant. And, $$$ does help..

Ron Meyer was back on the sidelines Saturday. Brought back the old memories. Bringing out the big buck$ is what got them the death sentence. They better watch out during this "win at what ever it cost "thinking spell. It could get the NCAA office opened back up in Dallas on Mockingbird Lane.
