Overall... the rush defense was far better than anything we've had from 03 to now...
Hopefully he can bring back this ability to stop the run... (Keep in mind, the Big XII is more pass oriented now than it was back then).
Which doesn't say much for our D'Line coaches we have had....

Lack of pressure on the QB.

I think some of the overall defensive scheme, or lack there of played a lot into our pass defense being weak.

playing the 4-2-5 played a big part in it
isn't the 4-2-5 a blitz package?

I always though of it more as the nickel...but if you were at VT it would be a blitz package.

it falls squarely on the d. coord...and ultimately the head coach...for personnel choices, putting the best athletes on the field, etc...
I think that is where we fell short...and in defensive scheming (as a whole)

we should play the 4-4 on short yards situations

or a 6-2...more beef in the middle

split 6?
The 6-2 is called the Split 6....
You have 4 guys on each side of the center.... :bored:

Picture a 4-4, but instead of a stack 4-4, the 2 OLBs are walked up on the line outside of the TE or OT. And the 2 MLBs are inside of the defensive linemen. Basically.

You are right that there are 4 guys on each side of the center but in the 6-2 the inside DL guys are in the C/G gaps with the LB outside shoulder of G and in the split-6 the DL are outside shoulder of G and LB are C/G gaps. But yes there is really no difference just the alignment.

Or a 4-2-5 but with 2 REALLY, REALLY BIG Safeties in a 3 point stance or a pass rushing stance right next to the DE's... ;)

True, the term split-6 is more specific and describes the LB placement.

I hope the coaches can find a scheme that will better fit our players. However, I think the immediate need for our D is to start sending our best "athlete" recruits to that side of the ball and get some bigger and faster athletes from which the D coaching staff can choose.
I'm at a loss to explain why in Darnell's first year in the 4-2-5 we improved drastically with only part of the defense installed. This spring and summer he added some of the more "complex" blitz packages and cover schemes but we got significantly worse.
I agree coaching is part of it, but I think in the end to field a truly great defense we're going to have to recruit much much better on that side of the ball.

.
I'd like to see that too, especially since we're pretty stacked at RB and have some good WRs coming in this class.
