Both of them in the same backfield (Dean as the "I" back and Gray in the slot) would be an awesome combination and would fit the pro style offense Sherm plans to employ.
And if Gray is recruited he will be unparalled in A&M football history as a kick returner.

Quick question.....
Should the Ags sign both Dean & Gray... what then becomes of Stephens????
Could he ride the pine like I initially said was a possibility???
What are the chances of him beating out Gray, Dean, Tarrant for a Starting spot after Goodson & Lane go Pro...
Or any other RB recruited after Gray & Dean????
I've been hoping I was wrong, but with Dean & Gray becoming more & more likely to sign with A&M.... I think it's becoming more & more evident that Stephens could very well fade away & or transfer.... JMO...
If he can't be a starter... at least use him on Returns or Special Teams coverage...
Use him for something... No sense in having him just sitting there....

I know he wanted to do it... but injuries are part of it.... Having Goodson returning Punts would have been far better than JP or Holland (Nothing against either one of them)...
Besides.... he's a RB... taking big hits is part of the position... They take hardest hits of anyone on the field.... and that hasn't stopped other programs from putting their RB's back there...

Why do you assume that Stephens would be the guy to lose out in that battle for the starting slot or playing time? All of those guys are unproven and only Tarrant has seen the field.
Pumchavas28
01-22-2008, 04:15 PM
I assume that because of what's been reported..... Both have talked on Rivals & Scout about early playing time... and the system A&M runs fitting in nicely with both of them...
Stephens (Other than a few early articles I brought up), seems to be the odd man out....
Again... I hope I'm wrong... but I just don't see Stephens beating out either Dean or Gray... JMO.

I suppose that it's an fair assumption that the guys brought in by a new coach will do better in that coach's system, but I wouldn't count out a guy who was just as highly ranked and all that. Not that rankings are Gospel, and I guess some people hold the level of competition against him, though, but I don't want to do that.
I don't get rivals or scout, so I hadn't seen that stuff or anything else about it. Interesting.
Pumchavas28
01-22-2008, 04:23 PM
I know most wont hold the level of competition against a guy... but I do against guys from the RGV....
Other than the Detmer brothers, OL Garza for the Chicago Bears & Leo Araguz (Former Raiders Punter), you don't see many kids from the RGV making it big at the College Level at all....
You probably have more kids from small towns like Burnette or Lufkin making it big than you have in the whole RGV put together....
The talent pool is slim to none down there.... Just calling it how it is..

I don't see my last post so I will restate it....I have heard coming from the team itself that Stephens is the BEST running back on the squad and just waiting to have the redshirt pulled this fall. In practice this past season he outperformed and ran circles around all the other backs we had. More than likely just like Dorman and probablly Fuller, Dean and Gray if they sign will be redshirted...Man I can hardly wait for Stephens' coming out party this fall.

Rio Grande Valley
Pumchavas28
01-22-2008, 04:33 PM
What is the RGV?
Rio Grande Valley.....
Consists of PSJA, Donna, Rio Grande City, La Joya, San Benito, McAllen, Harlingen, Brownsville, Weslaco, Edinburg, Los Fresnos, & several other schools....
Keep in Mind, that all of those towns/cities have 1 5A school, but several of those towns/cities have 2 or more 5A schools & that doesn't even include the list of 4A schools that are down there....
But if you take all those towns/cities & put all the 5A, 4A & even 3A football teams together... you wont come up with 1/2 the production you get out of Lufkin, Burnette or any 1 school in the SA, Dallas, Houston area's....
BuddyB
01-22-2008, 04:37 PM
I would assume the Rio Grand Valley...but I don't hold much relevance to a lot of the star rating system on rivals and scout...yeah its a good starting point but there are a lot of talented kids playing in smaller h/s programs that just dont get the visibility that some of the major metro areas get...I think we should be looking at some of these prospects as Sherm is seeing in size, SPEED (in the 40) and strength....

Yeah, I'm not saying that the level of talent is close to Houston, Dallas, or east TX (or even some of the power 4A or 3A districts). I'm just not gonna hold it against Stephens. Basically, the jury's out.
I'm glad he redshirted, and I hope that Gray, Dean, or whichever back signs does as well. I'm sure Dorman will as well. As for Fuller, who knows. It seems like most of what I hear about him is about his physical tools and stuff like that, but I get the impression that he's relatively raw, so I wouldn't be surprised, though.
Pumchavas28

Honestly... I don't hold much stock in the 40 times... Only because I have seen time & time again, guys with faster 40 times getting blown by....
Case in point... Goodson....
Goodson has out ran guys with faster 40 times consistently & then gets ran down himself by guys with slower 40 times....
He's outran some sips & Sooners who are said to be faster, but caught from behind by Safeties & LB's (granted shoe string tackles, but still).

Maybe both are. Maybe it's that Fuller's stats don't blow you away combined w/ the comments about him. But that could be the offense his school runs or the QB or a number of factors.

I am surprised that there is so much talk about Stephens and how he will perform for the Aggies or against other competition. He has already shown that coming out of the RGV means nothing. Bennett Stated that he was the biggest surprise in his eyes coming out of the fall practice. "Being so good so early". I heard that the kid can straight out ball. Did not A&M have two receivers from the RGV one who ended up playing for the Giants and one who scored a 60 yd TD in the game against Texas. Stephens has indeed been tearing it up in practice and was voted the practice team offensive MVP by the players in only six weeks of being there. I have only heard very good things from the players on the team when his name is mentioned. I guess we will just have to wait to see him out on the field. Those who have seen him have said he is really special on the field and will be perfect for Shermans offense. One player told me if you go back and look at his high school video's that is how he has been looking in practice. Red Shirting Stephens I heard was simply a political move by Fran, same with not playing any other QB's. Making moves like that is one of the reasons why A&M has new coaches!

There is a reason I left E. & J. Taylor off the list....
E. Taylor unfortunatly never duplicated what his brother did & was never able to be a threat to defenses...
And while that 1 long play against tu was great, would have been nice if he was able to do that more often than just once. One of the main reasons he was a starter was because he was a Senior & a good blocker....
J. Taylor was good, but how many good teams did he show up against for A&M??? I'm not trying to bash him or anything like that.... But during his time at A&M, A&M only beat 1 ranked team & that was #1 OU & he had a very, very small role in that.... Obviousy more goes into that than just 1 WR.... but his numbers against those teams weren't all that good at all....
I was very sad to see him get hurt when he was with the Giants & I really wanted him to have a long & great career... but I'm not basing my thoughts on RGV kids off of opinion or anything like that... It's all fact....
Also, even if you want to throw him in the mix... I'm sure I can find 1 HS that has still produced more talent on it's own....

Stephen has told me Bradley is a monster and would run all over our first team defense in practice. It got to the point where guys thought he was trying to show them up and coaches had to get involved, so the first team defense didn't hurt or alienate Bradley. Some of the guys on defense finally figured out he's just trying to make them better and he's also fighting to show he can play.
Pumchavas28
01-28-2008, 12:32 PM
I hope so..... If he is what people say he is, then maybe that will be the fire that Lane & Mike need to push harder.....
Yeah they are good RB's & all that... but everyone always has room for improvement & if Bradley is that good, then maybe he can push both of them to get better....
It's a shame though... If he was that good, then some of those runs that Keondra had last year might have been longer ones had Bradley been in the game & maybe he could have helped against OU, ttu, & Mizzou....
Burnetaggie99
01-28-2008, 12:38 PM
No doubt Fran wanted him to Redshirt. I see your point but why waste a guys Redshirt if he's only going to get maybe 100 carries. This way he still got 4 years to play but he's stronger, faster and seasoned from playing scout team RB aganist our first team defense.
DCAggie
01-28-2008, 12:45 PM
I'm definitely fine with the redshirt. If he'd have been the kick or punt returner, that'd be different, but I'm glad he's got 4 years left instead of a few carries.
Pumchavas28
01-28-2008, 12:47 PM
It wouldn't have been 100 carries, but at the same token.... Starting a kid that good hasn't stopped other program's from burning a talented RB's shirt, (WVU, USC, OU, Georgia) regardless of the starting Talent at RB.
Nothing against K. Smith or anything... but when Mike was out for the ttu game, not having him in the game really hurt & with Winning Now being such a huge issue in College, if Bradley is either the 2nd or 1st best RB we have, why not play him????
If he can break tackles & make a defender pay, then play him....
Yeah red-shirting him has benifits, but playing him now does also....
Playing him this past year could have made a world of difference.... Mike could have had some time at WR, or when Mike was suspended Bradley could have stepped in & we not lost a beat...
Keondra averaged 3.5 yds per carry this past year.... a full yard less than what Mike or Lane were averaging....
I am sure Bradley could have averaged 3.5 also, but if he was the better back, I would have expected that average to be higher....
Just saying....
Had he played & made the difference many think & hope he can, why not play him & end up with a better record & beat teams like ttu & Mizzou that would have really helped this season not be average.....
I don't see the sence in holding back your best talent... There are always ways to get your best players on the field if your willing to adjust & adapt & are looking to actually win the game at hand....
Pumchavas28
01-28-2008, 12:48 PM
Also.... No one complained when Mike took over for Clew... I doubt that if Bradley was this good, that anyone would complain if Bradley took a few carries away from Mike or if he took over the starting role....

I heard the same thing from some other people on the team! We have some great RB tallent at A&M. However, in Shermans offense it will be hard to keep Stephens off of the field. The kid was made for his style of offense. The way it was described to me was "If you want to know how Bradley has been doing in practice go back and look at some of his high school highlight films. The kid can straigt out ball".

I blame Fran for not throwing the ball to Goodson. I been saying for 2 years now that he should go in motion and line out wide to catch passes. Fran never really took advantage of the Spread offense like Meyer does. Just look at the way Harvin is used. Finally Les did this aganist tu this year but it was alittle to late.

I wish he had built off of that against PSU..... Les didn't add to what he built against tu... Instead of adding other dimensions to throwing the ball to Mike, Les stayed with it & PSU ate it up after those 1st 2 TD's....
Tellus & other WR's were never a factor & the WR's that were put into the game were hardle (if ever used) during the regular season.... :headslap: for Les....
