...SMU will pursue Hawaii coach Junes Jones and is prepared to pay between $1.5-1.7 million per year to lure him to the Conference USA school, according to two people familiar with SMU's strategy. ...
SMU may have a backup strategy, however. ESPN.com's John Clayton reports that the school has contacted Mike Martz, who was fired as offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=det) on Wednesday. ...
Former Miami coach Larry Coker and former Texas AM coach Dennis Franchione already have spoken with SMU about the job opening. ...

Seems SMU would have taken Fran already if they wanted him. Anybody have an update on Fran?

June Jones would be crazy not to take a 1.5 - 1.7 salary at SMU. He would definitely improve the program.
That is a big time salary they are offering so it looks like they are serious about their program. It'll be interesting to see who they get. I doubt anyone will downgrade to SMU so a coach like June Jones would be ideal. Even Coker and Fran have to be salivating on that.
I always thought Coker was a hack who depended on recruiting over coaching too much. He and Fran should just retire and play backgammon together.

Hiring June Jones would be a coup for SMU.

SMU has a commitment to their football program. Hawaii has no commitment to their athletic department.

it seems as though fran should take that job... plenty of money, and it's a school like tcu where he's proven to be an effective coach
he could probably end up retiring from that job

Jones is close...
In an impromptu address to his players yesterday afternoon, University of Hawai'i football coach June Jones said he will take the next few days to contemplate his future — options that include a possible offer from another school.
Big raise:
Jones' five-year contract expires June 30. It pays an annual base salary of $800,016, of which half is raised through donations.
So... double the salary. I can see why he'd leave Hawaii.
Jones signed with UH in December 1998, turning down an offer to remain as head coach of the San Diego Chargers. He inherited a team that was 0-12 in 1998. In Jones' first season as UH head coach, the Warriors went 9-4, the greatest turnaround in NCAA history.

Yes, but does he want to rebuild again, or ride the success of Hawaii? He's pretty much guaranteed an outside shot at a BCS bowl at Hawaii. @ SMU, it's going to take a long time and he may never reach that plateau. TCU is mentioned (sometimes) in that "undefeated" chance breath, but they seem to fall flat all the time.

As long as Fran does not get the job, I'm happy. Go June!

I thought Fran was the front runner? Did something go wrong in that negotiation or is SMU keeping their options open?

It's looking like SMU may have better options than Fran. Fran will be there....he needs a job, I don't blame SMU for looking at someone better

haha, I'd love to be the coach at hawaii, but it'd be tough to follow a guy like June Jones

Did y'all read how bad it is at Hawaii? They took game film for a long time on a handheld camera Jones won at a golf tournament and this year Colt Brennan had to campaign in the media just to get soap in the locker room. That sucks
