...was obviously a big part of the problems I had with Fran. I was at this game, and it was not a bit different from a Fran-coached game. Complete lack of use of Jorvorskie, too much passing, and too many plays that rely on Goodson dancing around in the backfield.
Welcome Coach Sherman and new staff. This program needs a clean sweep...

I dont think it was too much passing but I agree Javorskie was not used well in this game as he has not been all year:mad: . The play calling again makes me wonder if les was as much the problem as the former head coach. I am glad they are both gone and look forward to a new era of Aggie football

I'm agree with LOFTIN. What a bone-headed call on fourth down. Why not give it to the J-train. Yes, PSU controlled him somewhat, but not even they could stuff him for less than a yard. Good Riddance.

Not to be a party-pooper, but they stopped him twice for less than 1 yard on the same drive...Lane wasn't a guarantee last night. I'm very disappointed with the option to the outside. QB Sneak it, or freakin' give it to Lane or Alexander. If they don't get it, at least we tried with our best shot... I don't think it was a guarantee though -- Penn State's DL was tough all night....

Overall this was just a frustrating game to watch. So many things we do that I do not understand. Not running your big back on 4th and 1. Why we throw a pass 8 yards behind the line of scrimmage on a 3rd and 11.

I really couldnt understand why all year long Steven has been running the ball and last night he really didnt . There was one play towards the end of the game where he had a WIDE open field and he freaking threw the ball incomplete. The Ag's just didnt look like they had any fire in their bellies last night. Neither of those plays were on 4th down. Something special happens with Lane on 4th down. He may not be a 100% guarantee, but he's a much higher percentage than an option to the outside.
Also, you might not believe me, but I was actually hoping for a QB sneak on that play. That's the best play you can run when you need half a yard...

Yes, but 3rd and 1 where you have to punt if you don't get it is just like 4th down. I agree about the QB sneak...but honestly, we've probably run that about 4 times all year. I hope Sherman puts that back into the playbook.

Did we have to punt, or did the coaching staff not have faith in J-Train to do what's he's done his whole career on 4th down?

Two stops do not a mean we should not go to our bread and butter.
The train has been our man all this year and last. I rather give it our BEST shot and fail than do what we did. But slot back is right.

too much passing
sherman is probably going to pass 2x as much as fran did (but he will also have a far more effective passing game).

The logic there just doesn't make sense. If he could do it on 4th down, then why couldn't he do it on 3rd down? Does he try harder on 4th down? If so, I'm pissed he's not giving it his all every play.

WOW, a refreshing dose of sanity.:rep:
It's amazing that J-Train succeeds 90+ percent of the time and everybody talks about how he was stuffed. Yet, no one ever mentions that Goodson running or McGee throwing in those same situations is less than 50%. Why is J-Train on such a short leash, while our coaching staff continued to force success from players who weren't consistent?

If his passing game is far more effective, then passing more wouldn't be too much. Fran recruited and put together and power running team and then refused to stick to the power running game that we win with.

J-Train tries on every play. However, he gets better with every carry. There is some kind of momentum he gains with continuous touches. If a team stops him on third and short, they won the lottery. The odds of them doing it twice in a row are like being struck by lightning twice.

I definitely agree...
I'll even throw out another option in that situation: Chris Alexander. He had two earlier first down conversions in the game and is so small and strong, it's hard to get leverage on him in a short-yardage situation. Split the 6-7 TE out wide so a safety or CB has to cover him. If they decide to cover him out wide with a tall LB, two options: quick slant(utilize Tellus' speed) or give it to Chris(who has one less LB to worry about in the middle)
I'm no OC but I know that the Penn State LB'ers aren't exactly Bobino(t.u.)...they're fast and physical and can cover a running play from sideline to sideline

Yep, I think that there were three good calls for that situation:
1) I-Formation, J-Train run up the middle
2) Handoff to Alexander
3) QB sneak
Unfortunately, we decided to make McGee run backwards on a play that needed half a yard.

If they were going to run option they should of went 5 wide and then put goodson in motion coming back to the strong side and ran speed option. It would of spread out the defense and we have never got stuffed running that play. If I was the coach I would of put JJ in behind McGee and went 5 wide. McGee then would go in motion from his Qb spot and then the center would snap the ball and JJ runs a QB draw.:gig:

Just got back from the game.....
1st... JCruz, for the few moments I met him is a cool guy & was true to his word in offering us a round....:gig:
Before the game we had already had our fill, but we appreciated the offer.........
2nd.... About the game itself....
The OFFENSE WAS SO PREDICTABLE I called every play before they broke the huddle just on personnell alone....
It was so obvious what A&M was going to do I am surprised we had any yardage at all...
Les called a HORRIBLE game & I am not sad to see him gone... Lane while stopped a couple of times was never used enough for PSU to respect the inside running game... by the end of the 1st quarter, the LB's & DE's for PSU were playing the outside all game long...
Also... Goodson is good.. but he should not be the focal point of our offense... And McGee really had an off night with his accuracy.... I mean WOW... I know he needs surgery, but I can't help but wonder/worry about our back-ups..... How bad are the other QB's on the roster where a banged up McGee who needs surgery & isn't all that accurate is the better option?
It can't be for mobility... JJ has the same if not more mobility.... but how bad are their accuracies for because the McGee I've seen in T+1 games, is a far cry from the McGee I've seen in Bowl Games against Cal & PSU...
Lane... I feel for the kid.... I'm not saying he should have had 30 carries, but he should have been a bigger part of the playbook than just a decoy the majority of the night...
Same goes for Tellus... The Safety was being blown by both Tellus & Thomas all night & McGee never went to them except for one good pass to Tellus over the middle...
I don't blame Tellus for leaving... If the NFL scouts can see what his worth is despite the lack luster usage of him while he's been at A&M... that only further shows the coaching staffs inability to set things up for him... Also McGee needs to trust him more... McGee was willing to trust a WR on that dumb INT early in the 3rd quarter, yet he wont throw it up to Tellus (6'7) against a Safety that is barely 6'0..... I just don't understand it.. It's frustrating to think about it because it makes no sense at all... If McGee is going to just throw it up to somone, you would think it would be Tellus....
I was seriously pissed after the game...
Well they are about to show the game on ESPNU so I will watch it again to see if I missed anything...
Also.. both the O'Line & D'Line had their @$$es handed to them for the 3rd Bowl Game in a row...
It seems our O'Line can beat down tu, but against SEC, Big 10, & Pac 10 teams they just can't hang...
Pumchavas28

I also have to ask.... Did A&M make the extra effort to get Seniors into the game???? That is what it seemed like to me.......
Pumchavas28
12-30-2007, 11:20 PM
Also it didn't say much about our O'Line or Coaching Staff, that PSU was under manned at the DT spot & we didn't try to pound it in the middle more...
Sure PSU did some good things at 1st... but eventually their thin rotation at DT would take toll.... And A&M NEVER even tried to take advantage of that...
Instead of exposing their weakness, we went away from it & tried to over use Goodson who was the leading rusher & reciever....
