Yeah, Curly's answer confused me as well. A team from the SEC with an all american running back beating another conference team in OT isn't that much of an upset to me.

David vs. Goliath = ASU vs. Michigan

I voted Stanford. I think the App upset was big, but look at them. They're defending DI-AA champs and are in the NC again. They're a good team. It's not like a low D1-AA team pulled this upset.

However, Stanford, who probably wouldn't have a winning record in D1-AA, beat USC. This game shouldn't have even been close. And it probably cost USC the NC bid.

I went Bama losing to UL-M at home
I could see Stanford over USC and Appy State over Mich too, but not the others

I say App. state over Michigan just because a 1AA team going into a place like Michigan and winning has never been done before. Standford - USC may have had a bigger spread, but those types of upsets have happened before.

that's a good way to think of it from those dynamics...... where would appy state be if they were in div 1?

although i don't think i can still think of it that way even though if app state played stanford ten times then they would probably beat them the majority of the time.

the way i see it is not only did a div 2 team beat a div 1 team, they beat one who had a shot at playing for the national championship. so that is why that is not only be biggest upset this year but possibly ever in college football.

app state would kick the dog s**t outta stanford

usc's probably the most talented team in the country

it was a conference game

stanford was 4-8, not the two-time defending NC's and going for their third

it wasn't the first game of the year

so you don't think Division II Appy State defeating a (then) #2 Michigan in the Big House is better???

Stanford and Alabama were probably bigger upsets in term of difference in how good the teams are. However, Appalachian State over Michigan is the game that we'll still be talking about in 15 years.

Exactly what I was thinking. As far as talent differential, yeah, standford beating USC may be the biggest upset, but App. st. beating Michigan, I feel, had more of an impact, similar to George Mason going to the final four a couple of years ago. To me, Standford beating USC is like Baylor beating KU in basketball......not really monumental.

Appa st. is the biggest in this decade by far. Mich was a huge favorite.:gig:
