I told them today was the last day for late work. I had a crowd around my desk during each period asking what they are missing and then asking what their grade is after they turn it in.

The answer should be "F". "F" for failing to follow instructions the first time. "F" for shoddy work, even though I haven't reviewed it. And "F" because it will interrupt my watching of Aggie football while I grade your shoddy work which was late in the first place.
....my grandma taught school for 32 years, and you didn't turn in your work late to her.

Do what I do and have an assignment chart posted somewhere in your classroom for each period. Put a check mark for each assignment each student has completed so they can look for themselves what assignments they are missing.

I teach elementary. The biggest issues are tattling, not sharing and cutting in line.

I post grades every week. They know what they are missing but wait until the last minute to want to do it. I have a different plan for the next 9 weeks.

I have a folder for each day of the month in the back of the classroom where I keep all the days work in. If they ask me what they are missing, I say look at the chart and go to the folders and get it, just stay away from me.

I just give an A for every student that brings me mp3's are DVD's of movies that I don't already have. I give a B for every student that brings me some sort of hard candy. I bring a C for every student that just shows up and keeps their mouth shut. Everyone else gets an F. When their parents complain, I say, "No, no, you don't understand.....F is for Fran!" Well, at least that is what I would do if I were a teacher.

Today my suspicions were confirmed that people have gone into my gradebook and changed their grade when my back is turned. I keep it open b/c it takes forever to open it, and people are always asking about stuff. Now I'm going to keep it closed and that will keep people from asking me about assignments and grades.

punish them all until someone squeals...then publicly ostracize the violator(s)...

If she punishes them with work, she's just punishing herself
How else do you punish them?
whitelightnin_23

tell them they are all horrible human beings...make a weaker student cry...(falsly accusing them)...then the real culprit will surface...
:gig:
Fail them all for cheating. That will get them talking real quick.

Normally I would investigate, however administrators tend to not like my punishment methods. It might make the little darlins' and their parents cry.....NOW DROP AND GIVE ME 20!...STUDENTS OWE ME AN EXTRA 30!

High School kids have hearts of stone.
Elementary is easier, though. Making a kid sit out of a game for 5 minutes is a traumatic experience that brings forth countless tears.
