Joe Torre turned down the New York Yankees (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=nyy)' offer to return as manager on Thursday.
The Yankees offered Torre a one-year deal with a base salary of $5 million and incentives that would have increased his salary to $8 million based on postseason performance. Under that offer, if Torre reached the World Series in 2008, an option for 2009 would have vested.

I think that is funny. The yanks felt they were in total control and never imagined Torre turning them down. I think they may see the same thing with A-rod and some of the other free agents.

Yeah I think Torre waited for an offer just so he could say no to them.
I bet Arod goes to the Sox or Dodgers

I think the Cubs will be a player for him as well.

Yes they did...they gave him this offer knowing he would say no...we are talking about a manager that has been to the playoffs some 15 straight years or something like that...they offered him a lower base salary and higher insentives...on top of that it was only for one year....they knew he wouldn't take it....
it was a win win for both...the yanks make an offer not to piss off the fan base and torre declined an offer and looks as though he had the last word

Agreed. Torre has been there an awfully long time. A change of scenery for both is probably a good thing.

do the yankees really think they'll find someone better?

they have found someone that can slide right in his role...Mattingly..he was Torre's right hand man and manager in waiting...outside chance Girardi gets it though...it is really between those two

Astros should have waited in hiring a manager. I think they could have gotten the Torre/Rivera package. I know Rivera isn't dominate anymore but he's better than Lidge
