BB had some nice things to say about our BB program today....

(I know there's another thread about BB'sWW, but I wanted to just talk basketball)

We had nearly a full house Friday night for Maroon Madness to tip-off the men's and women's basketball season. I remember well our first few basketball years here, and I can't tell you how excited I am to see our women's team picked to win the Big 12 and to see the men's team near the top of every list too. Two of our freshmen, Tyra White and DeAndre Jordan, are listed on several preseason honor lists. We've come a long way because we hired great coaches and have top facilities for our student-athletes to work in. Plus, all of our fans have made Aggie Basketball a priority and made Reed Arena a formidable place to play.

I was with the football team in Lubbock and not on hand to enjoy Maroon Madness, but I understand Soulja Boy and our two basketball teams put on quite a show!
Drew Martin, one of our Assistant ADs, related a story about the positive experience that Soulja Boy and his crew had Friday on campus and in the community. Upon arrival in Aggieland, Soulja Boy, who is just 17 years old, wanted to stop by a fast food place for lunch. After paying for his crew, he put his change back in his pocket, but unknowingly $5 fell to the floor. As he turned to leave, another person in line bent over and picked up the money and got his attention to return the dropped money. Soulja Boy and his entire crew were taken a back by the gesture and it set the tone for their great experience in our community. Drew said they talked often about how clean the city is and how friendly the people are.

Special thanks go out to Assistant AD/Executive Director of Reed Arena Phillip Ray for securing Soulja Boy to perform while David Lawrence and Danny Spataro from Texas A&M Sports Properties brought Rudy's BBQ on board as the title sponsor of the event. Plus, a big thank you to the 50-plus students from MSC Town Hall and their advisor Dave Salmon for serving as ushers for the event.

In response to some basketball off-season email questions, we are filling in the west end of the arena with seats very similar to where our students sit now. This addition will completely fill in the courtside area. The new seats will be occupied by A&M students and our great basketball band Hullabaloo. We expect this area to be ready by Christmas.

In other facility construction news, we will be pouring the concrete at the Cox-McFerrin Center for Aggie Basketball this week. That facility, or at least the very deep hole in the ground, is starting to take shape. Fans can watch the progress of the basketball facility through our online camera at click here (http://www.aggieathletics.com/gallery/reedfacility/).

We are also pouring the piers on the track portion of the McFerrin Indoor Facility. For you non-construction terminology experts, piers are a mixture of concrete and rebar that is used for stabilizing the ground before they pour the actual floor. Soon there will be a non-stop cement pour of the floor which will stretch 196,000 square feet or some 4.5 acres. We are looking at opening that facility next Fall.

It's going to be great to have the extra student tickets available for the big conference games. :gig:

That will make a huge improvement on atmosphere. Plus, it will look much better on TV.
