Jamaal Charles, a fleet-footed running back hailed as one of the top recruits of this year’s freshman class, did not work out with the team Tuesday night because of academic issues.
As was the case with fellow back Henry Melton, Charles has not received the necessary approval of the NCAA clearinghouse, which monitors the academic record of incoming freshman and must give its blessing before a recruit can suit up.
While Melton’s situation was resolved Tuesday and he joined the team for practice, Charles’ plight was just becoming public.
“I have a clearinghouse issue that is being taken care of so I wasn’t able to practice today,” Charles said in a statement released by the team. “I am anxious to get started and expect to be at tomorrow’s practice.”
Charles has been widely expected to challenge for significant playing time as the Longhorns look for a successor to Cedric Benson at running back.
