View Full Version : A&M's defense: Bending is breaking

Let's get this straight: Bending is breaking. It doesn't work. It never will. It's not a winning stategy. That's why it's easy to run the field in 2 min offense when the denfense just needs to prevent a TD. Our defense is in bend mode and the offense gains positive yards every play. Not a winning strategy. LAMonroe could have had a better game if they didn't penalize themselves with false starts every other down.
Also, I don't like the 4-2-5. If you must run the 4-2-5, you have no excuse but to play better on recievers.

Learn football, please, if you insist on talking about it. The DEFENSE jumps offsides. The OFFENSE false starts.

bend but not break does work. Just because it's not working for us doesn't mean that it's a bad strategy.

Technically you can call the offense offsides. I meant to say false start though. BTW, you need to chill out because I know what I'm talking about jackass.
It is a bad strategy. I just explained it.

A very well thought out and interesting point. Maybe this should be a poll?

The 4-2-5 is not working marvels for us this season  Last season Coach Darnell was the master of halftime adjustments...hopefully he can remember how to do that from now on :gig:

Well so far except for Fresno he's done a good job of it..... Miami did only get 2 FG's in the 2nd 1/2...

How about we get a D coordinator who knows what defense to put in the game before it starts. I understand that adjustments are needed at half-time, but we dug ourselves some deep holes last season because the defensive schemes were so bad the first half of the game. Minor adjustmenst are one thing - allowing a team to run it up on you in the first half, and then be able to make major adjustments at half time and come out and stop them, makes you wonder what the heck he was thinking when he schemed the defense before the game.
Being a master of halftime adjustments is like the QB who gets praise for consistently pulling off come from behind victories - one has to wonder what the heck they were doing to get behind in the first place.

Yeah, I am gonna have to say we are all pretty clueless as to what the purpose and idea is behind our defense. One thing for sure, it is not to stop the opposing offense.

It' supposed to stop the "big" play, while conceding the "small" ones. Supposedly, you are giving up the field in small chunks, forcing the other team to run plays, and upping the odds they'll fail to execute and be forced to punt, turn it over, etc., rather than playing aggressively, and taking the chance that you'll get burned deep.
Except that we get burned deep anyway.
It's more of Fran's theory of playing the odds that sooner or later, the other guys will screw up, while you play it safe. Gawd I'm so sick of his crap. Let's not take a chance and make something happen, let's just wait and hope it happens.
We'll never, ever, see an aggressive, Wrecking Crew style defense, with Fran at the helm. He won't choose a coordinator who runs that kind of defense. I'm surprised he and Patterson coached together...although Patterson was much more restrained as a D coordinator than his defenses play now at TCU.

The one thing that you also have to consider is how passing games have evolved so that they negate the blitz. QBs are getting rid of the ball in a hurry. Our problem is the DB's are 10 yards off of the ball. There needs to be some occasions were the corners go ahead and play some bump and run. Mix it up. Some changes might be a positive.

Maybe our problem is the Front 4 more so than our 2ndary......
L$U, OU, & Miami all teams that get sacks & a lot pressure do it with just their front 4......
Miami blitzed 3 times the whole game by my count..... & killed our O'Line with their Front 4.... LSU will blitz a few times but their Front 4 pretty much dominates the Line....
Maybe if A&M had an awesome pass rush from the D'Line, things would be different....

True. However, Ray Childress, Edgar Fields, Tank Marshall and Ty Warren, etc. have used up all their eligibility.

yep, that last sentence kind of throws everything out of whack, but at least someone posted the theory behind it for conan.

So basically, it is saying, we are not going to stop you, we are just going to make you play a bunch of downs and hope you stop yourself. I think we have officially lost the right to even refer to the term "Wrecking Crew" with that kind of game plan. Maybe we can get dibs on "Waiting Crew", that way we can keep the hand sign and just change a few letters on the towels.

IMO you paraphrased my post very closely. And yes, that's hardly a theme for a "Wrecking Crew" defense to rally around.
