BECAUSE,

R.C. Slocum was ousted with a 123-47-2 overall record in his 14 years at A&M, the Aggies. Granted, he was only 32-24 in the Big XII, but what are we now in the Big 12? Let’s break his Big 12 conference record down since the start of the Big XII in 1996:

Texas Tech 2-5 (What is Fran's???)
Texas 2-5 (3 straight losses) (What is Fran's)

Oklahoma 4-3 (What is Fran's)
Colorado 1-3
Nebraska 1-4 (includes 54-15 loss in ‘97 Big XII Championship)
Kansas State 3-2 (includes 36-33 win in ‘98 Big XII Championship)I ask "What is Frans" rhetorically because anyone with sense knows the answer.
Let's look at R.C.’s bowl record, 3-8. Wins over BYU, Michigan, and TCU.

The losses:
1989 John Hancock Bowl #23 Pittsburgh 31, #16 A&M 28
1992 Cotton Bowl #5 Florida State 10, #9 A&M 2
1993 Cotton Bowl #5 Notre Dame 28, #3 A&M 3
1994 Cotton Bowl #4 Notre Dame 24, #6 A&M 21
1998 Cotton Bowl #5 UCLA 29, #19 A&M 23
1999 Sugar Bowl #3 Ohio State 24, #8 A&M 14
1999 Alamo Bowl #13 Penn State 24, #13 A&M 0
2000 Independence Bowl Mississippi State 43, A&M 41Did you notice that the Ag's are RATED?? When is the last time you saw US ranked that high??? WE can be GOOD, it is not beyond the Universities grasp. Despite the problems under R.C. with the Alumni, I would rather be worried about "how high we were ranked and why we can't win the "big one" THAN BE WHERE WE ARE NOW.:gig:

could of, would of, should of. Fran will always get us to #20, and then throw out the game plan that got us there.

rc should have been let go when he was let go and fran will be let go after this season barring a huge comback and winning the big12. both decisions will be right.... fran simply hasnt taken us to the next level.

I'll answer your question...when was the last time we were ranked that high -- 1999. Notice we weren't ranked in 2000, or 2001 when we went to the Galleryfurniture.com bowl and beat TCU. 2002 was even worse at 6-6 with no bowl game. That's why RC was let go. He wasn't getting the job done and we no longer had the "can't win the big one stigma." We were getting left behind by the OU's and tu's, so the change was made.

Fran is:
1-1 vs Colorado (50% winning percentage vs 33% for Slocum)
1-1 vs Iowa State (50% vs 100% for Slocum)
2-0 vs Kansas State (100% vs 60% for Slocum)
0-2 vs Nebraska (0% vs 25% for Slocum)
1-1 vs Missouri (50% vs 67% for Slocum)
2-0 vs Kansas (100% for both Slocum and Fran)

1-3 vs Texas (25% vs 29% for Slocum -- 1 win and Fran leads in the %)
1-3 vs Tech (25% vs 29% for Slocum -- 1 win and Fran leads in the %)
0-4 vs OU (0% vs 57% for Slocum)
3-1 vs OSU (75% vs 86% for Slocum)
3-1 vs Baylor (75% vs 100% for Slocum)

First thing to take out of this:
The teams are not the same in RC's era as opposed to Fran's. OU was not good in Slocum's era. Kansas State was. The opposite is true for Fran, etc. So a direct comparison isn't always easy/good -- but since we're throwing out numbers, thought I'd throw them all out.

Vly,

Thanks for supporting my cause. The majority of the stats you posted supported keeping R.C. And OU wasn't as good. OU has never been bad. They are just now getting back to where they were when RC was coach. They only had a couple of bad seasons..None with stoops in charge. I know, I know, "rose colored, fran lenses"

So we weren't ranked in 200-2001. big deal, you have to look at the whole picture, we were ranked more year under his helm than not.

It was time for RC to go when he did. He had a top 10 national team every year, then after 1998 we progressively got worse every season.

The mistake wasn't the firing, it was the hiring that followed where we made the mistake.

Was that RC's fault or the university not committing to getting him a new athletic facility to help with recruiting?

I'll go along with that Loftin, but Fran, despite the mods and admin, was not the Messiah.

I don't know that these numbers support that getting rid of slocum was the wrong thing to do. I think what they do show is that Nebraska, Texas and Tech have owned us since the Big XII started...

It's interesting you say that. I was thinking about him taking us to the next level on Friday.

Where has Fran spent the majority of time coaching? In the lower levels of college footall Div 2A, lower Div 1 conferences, etc.

A&M, against quality teams, looks exactly like a good Div 2 or lower Div 1 team should look against that level of opponent.

Fran is coaching what he knows.
