View Full Version : Tellus getting the ball?

How many catches do people really want him to get???
Just curious cause A&M is not going to be a ttu type of offense where every WR & TE will get at least 4 or 5 shots at a catch....
Not to mention that the running game is a must for our style... So while trying to feed Shock & Awe the ball you also have to include the 10 or less carries McGee averages a game also....
So how many catches should he get? I am just curious... I've seen a bunch of complaining or whining about it, but no one giving a number....
Does anyone realize he is tied for 7th in the NCAA for Receptions among TE's...
http://www.sportsline.com/collegefootball/stats/playersort/NCAAF/TE?&_1:col_1=4
Not to mention that last year against the Citadel he had the same number of catches & no one complained....
Lets not forget that he was tied for most catches on the team last year & stands a pretty good chance of leading the team in catches if none of the WR's step up....
I think folks need to ease up on the whole Tellus issue... Nebraska & Lafayette were the only games he had more than 3 catches last year & on average, most teams don't throw to a TE more than 4 to 6 times.....
Had the WR's held onto the ball the passing numbers would have been better & and I doubt anyone would complain.... then again.......

6 touches a game and his downfield blocking is enough for me

Other than Kansas & Nebraska last year, McGee never threw more than 28 passes..... on average only 11 passes were completed the other 11 games A&M played last year.... if Tellus gets 6 catches a game... then how are the other WR's supposed to have the break out year everyone hopes for with just an average of 5 catches left over???

Well A&M did throw it 23 times.... granted we ran 35 times.... I would say a better ratio would have been 28 passes & 30 rushes.....

While I understand the reasoning behind this post, I don't think this is a question of a specific number of throws to him that will appease the masses. I think the more important underlying theme is use your weapons when appropriate. No one can argue that we have weapons on the field, and a 6'7" TE with athletics skills is a weapon! For me personally it is not say 6 or 7 throws to him, it is more situation related. Say it's 3rd and 7, who do you go to? You get the drift use your weapons knowing more than likely your opponent is going to stack the box. No different than, 3rd and 2, when you need those 2 yds, who do you go to? Exactly, a different weapon more apporopriate for that situation. All I ask of the coaching staff, is to use the kid if not what is use of having him on the team;)

i think the more we will end up passing more as the games go on...you don't wanna let the cat outta the bag in the first game
also, it is my opinion that if we pass the ball more and pass it efficiently, we will have more offensive plays = more first downs = carries for J-Train & Mike
efficiently = Tellus (think about it, they're probably not going to double cover a TE, and dude is basically a possession WR matched up on a LB--how is that not high-percentage?)
...then get those safeties creepin' up on that run and the short routes, then have pierre or franks stop n go or an up n out and bam....talk about ink on the stat page...we can get the big plays from our WR's, just gotta start out gettin 'em to focus on Tellus;)

I think we'll see more out of Tellus when we see him in the slot more. I think we kept it vanilla in the passing game.
He's a true TE in that he also blocks...his greatest asset is that while he's in the game he can line up wide, in the slot, and as a TE and hurt you running and blocking.
Teams will continue to have a hard time keying on him the more varied his place in the offense becomes and I think that will happen as we go farther into the season.

faking to our running backs given our strong backfield, could be just as important to gaining yards as them physically doing it.
don't forget that.

people will never be happy. when we had a quick strike offense that was bombing away with Reggie, people didn't want to put our defense back on the field and wondered why we couldn't run the ball more. now people want to throw the ball more instead of controlling the clock.
And as an above posted said, I don't think there is a magical number. I think tossing it Tellus' way a couple of times early in the game is a good idea. If he comes up big, throw it to him some more. he's a TE, not a WR. he isn't only on the field to catch passes.

It is not that he had just 3 catches that really upsets me, it is more the fact that those 3 catches were in a row and he was ignored the rest of the game. And besides, throwing to him more and more will require teams to double team him and open up the running game more. If not, teams will continue to rush 8 guys and stuff the run.

How can you say ignored? We didn't pass much and I don't really recall him running free and open on pass plays that didn't get thrown his way.
Like I said earlier I think we'll see more of him stretching the field and hitting seams in zones, etc as the season progresses, but there was no need to do that in this game.
I see the last game as a scrimmage that counted of sorts. Lot's of basics on offense and experimenting on defense.
Worked on our bread and butter and got work in where it was needed. Now its time for Fresno State.
Also of note:
Antonio Gates avg. 4.1 catches per game over 17 weeks including 4 games with 2 games or less. He broke 100 yards once (on seven catches against Denver).
He avged 13 yards/catch which is nuts for a TE. I'm not saying Tellus is Antonio Gates but they bring similiar builds and playing styles to the field.
Also his catches trended up as the season went along as well.

I think when you have a 6'7" tight end, more plays should be called his way. He needs work to.

I think he had 4 balls that were thrown to him (he dropped one in the end zone). That's 4 out of 23 passes or 17% of passes thrown.
That does not include passes where he may have been the first option and was covered.
I would say that's pretty good work given that we were getting 7.5 yds/carry and the running game was the dominant piece of the game.
It's easy to say he was ignored when he's not getting a ton of catches but we don't know the whole story of plays called, what the defense was giving and what the team needed to work on.
I would say he's the most proven commodity in the passing game...we know what will happen when he's in space from the slot. Why show that on film when we have the game in hand with other weapons?

i'm not sure i would go so far as to say this, but i do agree with not letting film out on him when we are handling the game with other weapons.

Ask Baylor ;)
I would say he provides the scariest match up. Imagine trying to match up your personal with him in the game. Do you run standard D with 3 backers and try to stop the traditional spread option when you risk backer or SS covering him in the slot ala Baylor or the tu game?
He dictates that you pick your poison. Bring in the nickel or dime too much to stop the slot action and suddenly he shifts to a standard TE and suddenly is sealing the corner on stretch plays, draws, option, etc.
The fact that he is a great blocker makes him the keystone in our multiple offense imo.

Just for shyts & giggles, when A&M is blowing someone out, I would like to see Tellus run the ball off a hand off & or Throw it on a trick play.....:gig:

I'd like to see him do an hback reverse/statue of liberty/toss pass.....it would probably not work but it would be crazy as hell and I bet he can fling the ball a country mile.

Anyone see Mizzou use the direct snap to their TE near the goal line? Didn't get in for the td, but still and interesting idea w/ fast TE.

I had brought that up a while back with A&M using Tellus but it was shot down....

I'm not really advocating it. I think after Ark used it so much and so well last year, the direct snap will be overused this year. Seems like it already was on the first weekend. At least not w/ the rbs we have. Play action near the goal line would make more sense to me.
