Hey guys. I had my roommate post this on Texags too.
I got to talk to the head of the tailgating committee and here are the responses he gave me. BTW, this is the provost of A&M, so he knows!
I had the privilege to speak to one of the heads of the tailgating committee today. He was very very nice and provided good answers to all questions.
This is the Tailgating response from head of "tailgating committee" that called me this afternoon... Bill Byrne was not apart of this committee.
Here are some explanations regarding the new Spence Park Rules:
1) West campus is not affected by any of these rules, or is any other part of campus
2) No BBQ rigs on trailers rule -- The reason for this is two fold.
-- Spence Park got severely rutted up and torn up last year because of people misusing their rigs.
-- Liability issue. A&M employees were helping fans unload thier rigs into Spence Park. There were wrecks after the game last year and if someone was drunk and wrecked their rig into someone and killed the victim, A&M would be liable.
-- You can still use bbq pits that you can carry into spence (i.e. propane, charcoal, etc.)
3) The University administrators are very much in favor of tailgating. They made the changes due to liability purposes. They want tailgating to grow across campus, and enjoy taking part in tailgating. They want us to become a top tailgating destination and have no intention of outlawing tailgating in Spence Park (or anywhere).
4) Generators outlawed in Spence Park. They called several SEC schools and Big 10 schools about this. Apparently there were 3 incidents over the past year at other schools where generators blew and caused injuries, not to mention the noise/gas and smell. Only one SEC school allows generators. A&M decided to follow suit and outlaw them from Spence Park since it was a confined area and was a risk for injuries. The University will post addresses of stores (on their tailgating website) in the B/CS areas that will carry inverters and marine batteries AT A DISCOUNT. University officials went out and told stores to do this. For whatever reason this rule does not apply to West Campus. Now does that sound like they are against tailgating?
5) All C Lot and A Lot people can drink on the grass around Kyle. They are trying to eliminate people walking up to the gates while drinking.
6) Duncan Field is open to tailgating now.
7) The setup times really haven't changed much, but they are doing it for logistical purposes.
