Citing increased accidents and injuries on college campuses, Texas A&M University added new rules Thursday to the university's tailgating regulations.
Among them: extending the alcohol-free zone around Kyle Field and tighter restrictions on tailgate party setup times.
The complete list of rules is as follows:
* In Spence Park, site setup may begin at noon on the day immediately preceding a home football game.
* Tailgate sites in Spence Park may not be occupied between midnight and 5 a.m. on the night before a home game.
* Trailers, barbecue rigs on trailers, or generators will not be allowed in Spence Park.
* Tailgate supplies must be carried into Spence Park by hand. Supplies may be off-loaded in designated zones. Access to Spence Park from Houston Street will close four hours prior to game time.
* The alcohol-free zone is extended to include the Fan Zone and all sidewalks adjacent to Kyle Field.
A&M Interim President Eddie Davis released a joint statement with Director of Athletics Bill Byrne regarding the updated policy.
“Football season brings tens of thousands of former students and other visitors to campus each fall. The safety of our visitors is our top priority, just as the safety of our students, faculty and staff is our top priority throughout the entire year.
“An increase in tailgating-related accidents and injuries at colleges and universities around the nation has prompted officials to redouble efforts to ensure safety. While no major tailgating accidents have occurred at Texas A&M, we are taking proactive measures to protect the safety and well-being of our fans and visitors.
“The growing popularity of tailgating in recent years has brought us challenges, including inadequate restroom facilities, damage to University property, building security, and excessive alcohol consumption. In response, last fall we distributed flyers with suggestions about responsible tailgating, rented more portable restrooms and surveyed tailgaters to find out how their experience could be improved.
“We also created an advisory group comprised of representatives from the University administration, the Athletic Department, the 12th Man Foundation, The Association of Former Students and several individuals who responded to the survey to give us a detailed report on the survey results and make recommendations. The group’s recommendations, which we fully endorse, have already been adopted:
“We also have launched a tailgating management plan on key issues such as space allotments and parking. Steve Hodge, director of special events facilities, will oversee implementation of the plan.
“Our new tailgating website ([URL]http://tailgating.tamu.edu) provides more information about the new guidelines and related issues. Please bookmark the site, which will be updated frequently with new information about traffic, parking and tailgating in general.
“Gameday at Kyle Field has been known for generations as a unique showcase of Aggie pride and loyalty. We appreciate your help in ensuring that gameday continues to be a safe experience as well as an unforgettable one for everyone who participates.”
The new tailgating rules take effect this fall. A link to the A&M tailgating website is below.

I know they have already stated that no generators will be allowed in non RV lots this Fall. They might outlaw firepits and such this year or wait until next year.

where is the no generators rule? How do they expect us to power our tv's? A&M's new motto should be... A&M Strongly resisting change since 1876

The 12th Man told me the no generator rule on the phone about a month ago. I am sure it is published somewhere but I cannot find it at the moment.

The other option for power is a battery converter/inverter if you are not powering too much.

I'm sure someone will somehow blame this on Fran.

I did this quite often... It's hell on batteries when you do it every weekend. We have a stereo that runs off a marine battery but the tv pulls too much.

I blame the former students that forget what it's like to have fun or allow their non ag wives control them and make them gripe about all the fun everyone is having.

non ag wives

That eliminates me. I knew better than to marry a non ag.

The only reason I can think the 12th Man won't allow generators is because of the noise and maybe possible fire danger. If so, A&M again seems to enjoy restricting everything these days.

Yeah I'm sure they'll start restricting shades of maroon allowed into kyle field soon.

Follow LSU's rules.....generators allowed (as long as they aren't the big trailer pulled ones) and no professional grills (i.e. on trailers).

It has to be some fire regulation or some other city/campus code...it's just a bit over the top.

It's okay to do it 200 feet away in a designated RV lot? Are they concerned with taking up too many parking spaces with non parking activities???

I spoke with the provost who was the head of the tailgating committee on the phone the other day.... he told me that West Campus was not going to be affected by any of this.

-You can have generators on west campus.

- You can have large grills on west campus.

West campus goes on untouched. He did say that they are looking at making the back two E lots as lots for all the big rigs since some lots are too small for big rigs, but this wouldn't take affect for anothe couple years.

He told me the university is very much in favor of tailgating, and wants it to grow, but they had to make liability changes in Spence park.

Here is my write up that my roommate posted on Texags.

had the privilege to speak to one of the heads of the tailgating committee today. He was very very nice and provided good answers to all questions.

This is the Tailgating response from head of "tailgating committee" that called me this afternoon... Bill Byrne was not apart of this committee.

Here are some explanations regarding the new Spence Park Rules:

1) West campus is not affected by any of these rules, or is any other part of campus

2) No BBQ rigs on trailers rule -- The reason for this is two fold.
-- Spence Park got severely rutted up and torn up last year because of people misusing their rigs.
-- Liability issue. A&M employees were helping fans unload thier rigs into Spence Park. There were wrecks after the game last year and if someone was drunk and wrecked their rig into someone and killed the victim, A&M would be liable.
-- You can still use bbq pits that you can carry into spence (i.e. propane, charcoal, etc.)

3) The University administrators are very much in favor of tailgating. They made the changes due to liability purposes. They want tailgating to grow across campus, and enjoy taking part in tailgating. They want us to become a top tailgating destination and have no intention of outlawing tailgating in Spence Park (or anywhere).

4) Generators outlawed in Spence Park. They called several SEC schools and Big 10 schools about this. Apparently there were 3 incidents over the past year at other schools where generators blew and caused injuries, not to mention the noise/gas and smell. Only one SEC school allows generators. A&M decided to follow suit and outlaw them from Spence Park since it was a confined area and was a risk for injuries. The University will post addresses of stores (on their tailgating website) in the B/CS areas that will carry inverters and marine batteries AT A DISCOUNT. University officials went out and told stores to do this. For whatever reason this rule does not apply to West Campus. Now does that sound like they are against tailgating?

5) All C Lot and A Lot people can drink on the grass around Kyle. They are trying to eliminate people walking up to the gates while drinking.

6) Duncan Field is open to tailgating now.

7) The setup times really haven't changed much, but they are doing it for logistical purposes.

Your tank up will just have to be accomplished a few steps earlier.
Be happy that they will still let you on the plane.

I hope they just take the lot that is directly connected to Lot R (just SW of the lot) and turn that into a RV lot next year. That would solve the RV parking situation for awhile and still allow Lot E to have most of the Reed lots. Also, we are fairly isolated in Lot R so my little boy doesn't get into as many things there with other tailgaters.

you should send an email to gameday.tamu.edu and suggest that lot 97 be an RV lot.

They have invited me to be on their tailgating committee for any future endeavours seeing that I have served on one at Ohio State University. I will totally back that lot as an RV lot and let E lot be the adjacent lots to Reed.
