Do y'all think that he deserves the record or an *?
Pretty classy of Hank to congratulate him...

he deserves the record until it can be PROVEN that it is legitimate...
so far...the evidence is that of medieval witch hunts...

Agree, I'm a bit of a B*nds hater ;)

I think even if he is proven to have taken steroids, with everyone else taking them as well, I don't think baseball can or should put an * next to the record.

if you put an asterisk on Bonds record...do you go as far as putting an Asterisk by:
Ruth/Maris/DiMaggio/Mantle, etc who played without blacks in the league? Look at how baseball is impacted now w/ blacks/African-Americans/etc in the game...
you could probably put an asterisk by every record played when they expanded the # of games to 162...
just shows you some of the slippery slope you go down...

there would have to be an * next to any record before the 1920's when spitballs were allowed.

Spitballs or not playing against blacks never broke a federal law!

And how many players do you think were coked up in the 50's? Pete Rose's records were not taken away either. I don't think you can really consider it cheating when well over half of all the players were using them and they were not illegal at the time in baseball.

Let me throw in day-time and night-time baseball eras.:undecided:
Don't forget train travel vs.air travel. :undecided:
I believe they played more double hitters prior to the 60's. Weren't some of those games only 7 innings?

Look, Ray Charles can see the man used performance enhancing drugs. He, along with a few others, were thin and all of a sudden they ballooned up into hulks. He does not deserve the record at all.

In the 50s? None. Now in the 80s, maybe quite a few...but then again, how exactly does cocaine help you as a ball player. Doc Ellis threw a no-hitter while high on acid, but other than that, you don't hear of anyone getting better because of illict drugs.
Pete Rose's records were not taken away either.
What exactly was Pete Rose doing wrong when he set those records?
they were not illegal at the time in baseball
Quick question: In general, is baseball played in the US? Assuming that you will answer yes, it doesn't matter if it was illegal in baseball or not. It was illegal in America. If my company doesn't drug test, & I choose to smoke grass (assuming its not for my cataracts), am I not still doing something illegal?

haha, Dock Ellis. maybe its a doc thing. You gotta assume doc gooden was high every game
Bonds cheated. Period. Did other players, sure. But that doesn't make him right. He gets press because hes a better player and the record chase. I don't get what you arguments are.
Its not Race either. If AJ Pierzynski was going after the record under the same conditions he would be just as hated.

I still say the most compelling evidence against bonds is allowing his life long best friend to continue to sit in jail on contempt charges while he continues to play baseball. If he did nothing wrong, then why does greg anderson continue to sit in jail?
As far as the record, it is his. You can't take away the homeruns. I think Peter Gammons said it best with "the 90's was the steriod era in baseball and bonds is the best player during his era".

I think Gammons said that is response to whether Bonds was a HOFer or not--which in my mind, he is. That shouldn't come into the argument of whether or not hitting 756 HRs is legit or not.

I think they should change the rules to get in the HOF
not for records for a team player no selfish players and that plays to win and have fun
Bonds deserves the record. Let history judge him.

Actually Maris and Mantle played against African Americans their whole career. Dimaggio did towards the end of his. Ruth is he only one that never played against blacks. I see your arguement just thought I would point that out

What about a batter that corked his bat -- should he get an asterisk next to all his hits and homeruns (Sammy Sosa)?
What about a pitcher that got thrown out for cheating -- marking up the ball, spitballs or foreign substances on the ball? Should all their wins have asterisks?
A lot of the pitchers in the hall of fame admitted to doing things to the ball when they pitched...
Asterisks are easy to hand out...

As far as not playing against blacks, you can't punish the players. They had nothing to do with that. The league made those decisions.

Yes, Sosa should have an asterisk. For cork and for steroids.
