First off, I need to start this thread with a big, fat **** you to Mother Nature. On Monday evening, a severe T-storm rolled right over my house. I guess Mother Nature thought it would be a good idea to put a lightning bolt through my house. So, I've spent the last couple of days trying to get my house back to normal, although it is going to take a long time.

I'm VERY lucky for a couple of reasons. First, it did not catch my house on fire and didn't put a hole in the roof. Instead, the lightning hit my chimney, traveled down my fireplace, and then decided to ground itself in my water lines, therefore busting them and flooding my bedroom. All of my phone lines are fried as well as my security system. Somehow, my electronics are okay. Not sure how that happened.

I've got the water running again (after many hours of work and many holes in my walls. The carpet in my room is almost dried so I'll get that fixed in the next week. I started rewiring all the phone lines this morning and got one working for now so that I can at least make and receive calls. The security company will be coming out tomorrow to access the damage to my security system. I assume it is toast b/c I had to cut the line with wire cutters just to get the damn thing to turn off.

All that stuff is frustrating, but can be replaced. What scares me the most is that I realize just how close I came to my son and me being killed. When the lightning bolt hit, I was on my way to the bedroom with my 2 year old son to take a shower. Had this all happened one or two minutes later, I would have been in the shower with him and we would have both been electrocuted. I guess I'll just thank my guardian angel again for watching over my family. I learned a big lesson on Monday. You always hear during severe storms that you should never be on the phone or in the shower. I never thought too much about that b/c the chances of something happening are so small. However, this was way too close. So, just remember the next time you are in a big thunderstorm, stay away from your shower and the phones. It might save your life. It did mine.

My wife always gives me s**t when I tell her to get off the phone or to not take a shower during a storm. I'm gonna share your story with her so she'll never do it again...too bad about your house but glad you're ok...

Thinking about how close my family was to being seriously hurt or killed is what scares me the most. Sure, getting the house fixed is a pain in the ass, but everything could have been much worse.

I was just thinking about it. I can't remember ever taking a shower during a thunderstorm. It's not that I intentionally don't do it, it's just never happened.

Either way I'll make sure not to do it in the future.

If there is a t-storm, I usually just stand naked under a tree with a bar of soap. I also keep an aluminum bat handy in case any animals disturb me.

that is a good strategy, but if you really want to be safe you'd move up on top of your house and stand in a metal washtub full of water (to clean yourself with).

You might ask "why do i need water to clean myself if it is raining?", and that is a good question with an even better answer... you'll need the water, because the rain will be deflected by the metal handled umbrella that you are holding :headslap:

Good to hear you are ok. Sorry about the house. That is going to take a lot of work to get everything back to normal.

Everything is slowly getting back to normal. I've got a temporary fix on the water lines to allow me to have running water in the house. I'll fix it permanently this weekend. The carpet is dried and back down, but still needs to be stretched back into place. The security company is fixing my system today. Luckily, it only fried a couple of sensors. I've got one phone jack working for now so that I can at least make and receive calls. Everything should be back to normal in the next few weeks.

I'm just still a little freaked out thinking about how close I was to being in that shower with my son.

Last year there was a family on my street who had the same thing happen to them, except it struck right through the middle of the house instead of the fireplace. As a result they had a huge gash in the middle of their roof and the inside got all burnt up. Lucky for them nobody was home when it happened. So I guess it could always be worse, there house wasn't salvageble, hopefully yours will be. Best of wishes and I hope everything works out.

Same thing happened to my grandfather's house except it was in the 70's on a ranch. It blew a microwave across the kitchen and went downt he water pipes to his pump house and burned out the pump on his well.

Lightning is no joke for sure glad you're ok.
