First off, I need to start this thread with a big, fat **** you to Mother Nature. On Monday evening, a severe T-storm rolled right over my house. I guess Mother Nature thought it would be a good idea to put a lightning bolt through my house. So, I've spent the last couple of days trying to get my house back to normal, although it is going to take a long time.
I'm VERY lucky for a couple of reasons. First, it did not catch my house on fire and didn't put a hole in the roof. Instead, the lightning hit my chimney, traveled down my fireplace, and then decided to ground itself in my water lines, therefore busting them and flooding my bedroom. All of my phone lines are fried as well as my security system. Somehow, my electronics are okay. Not sure how that happened.
I've got the water running again (after many hours of work and many holes in my walls. The carpet in my room is almost dried so I'll get that fixed in the next week. I started rewiring all the phone lines this morning and got one working for now so that I can at least make and receive calls. The security company will be coming out tomorrow to access the damage to my security system. I assume it is toast b/c I had to cut the line with wire cutters just to get the damn thing to turn off.
All that stuff is frustrating, but can be replaced. What scares me the most is that I realize just how close I came to my son and me being killed. When the lightning bolt hit, I was on my way to the bedroom with my 2 year old son to take a shower. Had this all happened one or two minutes later, I would have been in the shower with him and we would have both been electrocuted. I guess I'll just thank my guardian angel again for watching over my family. I learned a big lesson on Monday. You always hear during severe storms that you should never be on the phone or in the shower. I never thought too much about that b/c the chances of something happening are so small. However, this was way too close. So, just remember the next time you are in a big thunderstorm, stay away from your shower and the phones. It might save your life. It did mine.
