Gambling in Texas? Sure. I wouldn't mind not having to go so far to play blackjack.

Yes...definitely agree gambling should be legalized in TX. I moved back here from a state that had legalized gambling and I miss going to the casinos.

the federal government doesn't have that ability. It's a state's right

Nationwide would be fine, as the Casino owners are not going to build in every state. Texas would kill Louisiana if they opened up gambling.

Gambling is one of the best ways to make money for the government.
As a consumer you are paying to play a game first of all (entertainment), and second of all the game allows you a chance to win a sum of money. The government can make huge gains from it as well, and it is all VOLUNTARY expenditure on the citizen's behalf.

why does it make sense that your winnings at a casino are taxable, but if you loose money, you can't write that off as a loss on your taxes?

It's absolutely ridiculous that Texas hasn't legalized gambling. And their main argument is the "social and moral" obligations of it all. Uh, excuse me all you have to do is go one state over to Louisiana and gamble. It's already here so all you are doing is letting a billion dollars of Texas money go to Louisiana.
People are going to gamble anyway so our Our "Social and Moral" obligations should be to pay our teachers and familiar occupations more.
Not to mention Texas has a gold mine waiting..... We could even legalize Sports Gambling and have us be the only State along with Nevada where you can do that. That would be huge.
Although this vote has already failed in the last State Legislature so now we have to wait two more years for the shot.
Godda**it I just want to be able to walk across the street to play craps or place a sports bet!
As much as I would like them to build casinos in Texas I don't think they will. Another big reason not to is the effect it would have on pro sports in Texas.
Vegas is having a really hard time getting a pro team of any kind because of all the gambling. Now with the NBA ref scandal I doubt Vegas has a snowballs chance at any kind of sports team.
Now if Texas goes and builds a bunch of casinos. How would that effect the existing teams in Texas? I don't think Houston, Dallas, or San Antonio would want a casino anywhere near their teams for fear of suspicion of illegal activities.

how does the proximity of a team to a casino change how corrupt they can be. Want me to place a bet in vegas right now? I'm sure I could have it done in the next hour without ever leaving college station

People will assume they are more easily corruptable because they are close to a casino. That's why it's been so hard for Vegas to get a team, because of the all the gambling.

i thought the problem with vegas was that their market was so small. And who cares if people assume they are more easily corruptible. Logical people know that if bets are going to be made they'll be made reguardless

doesnt the wnba conneticut team play in a facility which is connected to and paid for by a casino? if i recall correctly, it is. by not putting a team in vegas, the nba for one, is being a little hypocritical if this is the case.

that is true zrf. The team is called the Mohegan Sun and it's located in the Mohegan Sun casino...very nice casino by the way. The difference is that there is no sports betting allowed at this casino (i don't think)

agree. You might as well legalize gambling. People are doing it already and the state is just losing the money. Keep the money at home by legalizing.

Public preception is everything for businesses and pro sports is a business. If people think that the games are rigged because of the gambling influence then they won't go. That's the problem the NBA is dealing with now in the ref scandal.
The public as a whole is not very logical.
