I got rid of halftime since thats a legit break in play where you can do other things, and forget the game for a reasonable length of time.
NFL game length is 3 hours 10 minutes. 12 minute halftime. Basically 3 hours.
MLS game length is 95 minutes.
During 2006 there were 1181 NFL touchdowns in 256 games for an average of 4.6 TD per game, which ignoring overtime yields less than 1.53 TD per hour.
During 2006 there were 503 MLS goals in 192 games for an average of 2.7 goals per game, which gives an average (no overtime in MLS to worry about) of 1.71 goals per hour.a baseball game that ends1-0 with 7 hits (both teams combined) scattered around 9 innings will be labled a pitchers duel and sportsfans will talk about the nuances of the games and strategy etc. and how wonderful the shutout was.
in reality it was 4 hours or more of hitters standing in the box watching a pitch go by and then taking 5 minutes to adjust their jock, helmet, wristbands, arm armor, shin pads, batting gloves, rubbing dirt on their hands, tar on their bats, crossing themselves, kissing lucky charms, imploring divine internention, knocking dirt from their cleats (which had o so much time to build up) shaking various body parts, taking 15 very slow pratice swings, shaking the bat, digging in one foot...and watching another pitch go by. repeat.
a soccer game ending 1-0 means the sportsfans talk about how boring the game is and how the wish for more scoring
i find most arguments against soccer to be just down right silly and i dont understand why soccer threatens the manhood of most american sportsfans.
i mean, i dont like baseball much. i used to follow and play it religiously. now about he only games i can watch is the world serise, and even then, not so much in recent years. but i dont bash it to other sportsfans. it is their sport and if they enjoy watching it, more power to them. it isnt for me anymore, yet most american sportsfans go out of their way to bash soccer and tear it down. dont get it
there are very very exciting games that end 0-0.
i'd say HR = goals....but any decent baseball fan gets just as much of a kick out of watching the other parts of the game.
just gets old listening to people say how slow [soccer] is and how it takes all game to score, but then they say they're avid stros fans.
