A FOOTBALL FINAL FOUR BY 2011 ... Rose Bowl is in the Way
Under the new format, the top four teams would be seeded, probably using a voter/computer formula similar to the current BCS system and a sixth major bowl game would be created.
The four top-seeded teams would play in two "semifinal" games, using the existing bowls - Orange, Sugar, Rose, Fiesta and the current BCS title game on a rotating basis - with the two winners meeting in a newly created bowl. Theoretically, it would leave less argument over who's No. 1.
After a huge controversy ensued following the 2004 season, when undefeated Auburn didn't get a chance to play for the national championship, Bodog.com, a sports casino poker site, offered $50 million to sponsor a championship game. The offer was rejected, but that number left many in the college football business salivating.
For a "Plus-1" to happen, the Rose Bowl would have to be willing to loosen its grip on matching the top Big Ten and Pac-10 representatives. That is considered the biggest stumbling block.

Can you name the non Pac 10 and Big 10 teams that have played in the Rose Bowl and the year they played?

Sounds good, but I would like to see an 8 team playoff...

Me too, but a 4-team playoff is a HUGE step in the right direction.:gig:

The Rose Bowl higher-ups are a bunch of crybaby biyatches though. They just need to let go and stop impeding progress. They are so intent on always having a Big10/Pac 10 match up. That is stupid.

The 16 team playoff has worked for 30 years in I-AA (well now FCS). The playoffs are fun, especially if you have 3 home games in a row.

I would like to see a 6 team playoff with the top 2 seeds getting a bye. That way, the four BCS bowls could host the first two rounds and the championship game being played on a rotational basis.
With 6 teams, finishing first or second still means something. My biggest problem with a big playoff system is that end of the year rivalry games would lose their appeal. I would hate to see tu playing their 3rd string guys against us and take the game "off" so they could rest their players for the playoffs.
There could still be a bcs formula for determining the six teams, but there would still need to be requirements. I think the requirements would need to be:
1. In order to be one of the six teams, the team must win their conference. This gaurantees that there will be six teams from six different conferences. This also forces Norte Dame to join a damn conference!
2. Winning your conference does not mean you are in the playoff. This keeps a team like K-State from a few years ago getting in when they upset OU, they did not deserve to be bcs.
3. If a team finishes undefeated, they are gauranteed a spot. This gives non-bcs conferences a chance.
4. With the off-chance that their are more than 6 undefeated teams, bcs conferences take priority over non bcs conferences.
5. And to be considered bcs worthy, all non bcs conf. teams must have at least one victory against a bcs conference team. This keeps a team like boise st. from front loading their schedule with a bunch of 1AA pansies.
So under this system, last year would have seen ohio st and florida with the number 1 and 2 seeds and first round byes and most likely boise st, usc, louisville, and OU with the other 4 spots.

they should go through with it and just ignore the rosebowl... the best teams in the pac 10 and big 10 will have to chose what game they want to play in... the playoffs or the rosebowl

At least we are moving in the right direction. I think this will only continue to grow. Slowly, but it will grow.

Start with 4 teams, then move it to 8. Not sure how I'd feel about a 16 team playoff b/c then you would be including teams that lost 2 games.

I like KC's solution. And if they say they have no time, thats crud because they take a month off for bowl games anyway... but the top 8 teams play for #1 and the rest have bowl games as usual, no change to that. I think this will make more competition in College football then there is at the moment. I know that is hard but I would love to see it.
Make the top stadiums....
quarter finals - home team hosts
semi finals - orange or sugar or rose
finals - the one that didnt get choosen for semi.... ~ rotates every year so every 3 years each stadium has a finals game.

Personally, I'd like to see a 12-team playoff.
It let's ALL of the contenders get a shot at the title. Also, with 4 byes, teams have reason to win every game (the main argument against a playoff).

I don't understand why the NCAA doesn't just leave this topic to AggieFans. Looks to me like we have it all figured out!

Beginning with the 1947 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1947) game, the game's participants were established as the champions of what is now the Big Ten Conference (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Ten_Conference) and the Pac-10.
There have been only four (4) teams since 1947 that have played in the Rose Bowl Game that were not from these two conferences. They are Miami (FL) and Nebraska in 2002, Oklahoma in 2003 and Texas in 2005 & 2006
Other Division I FBS Schools by appearances at the Rose Bowl Game
Team Appearances Wins Ties
Alabama 6 4 1
Pittsburgh 4 1
Texas 2 2
Duke 2 0
Nebraska 2 0
Tennessee 2 0
Georgia 1 1
Georgia Tech 1 1
Miami (FL) 1 1
Notre Dame 1 1
Oklahoma 1 1
Navy 1 0 1
Southern Methodist 1 0
Tulane 1 0
The inaugural game featured the dominating 1901 Michigan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michigan_Wolverines_football) team, representing the East, who crushed Stanford University (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_University), representing the West, by a score of 49-0 after Stanford quit in the third quarter.
The game was so lopsided that for the next 15 years, the Tournament of Roses officials ran chariot races, ostrich races, and other various events instead of footbal.
Do you know of any other football team that quit like Standford?
