Not too much great stuff in here...mainly because of the summer lull.

One activity allowable to report: quarterback Stephen McGee, linebacker Mark Dodge, and tight end Martellus Bennett participated in the Coach Fran Charities/Boys and Girls Club Celebrity Golf Classic last weekend.
....
Some players from recent years also participated as team captains – Terrence Murphy, who introduced his fiancé to everybody at the Friday night dinner party, and Chad Schroeder. Chad informed us that he retired from pro football after a few weeks trying out as a free agent with the San Diego Chargers.

It looks like Chad's done trying for the NFL. That's too bad...

George in San Antonio wrote in with this week’s question: What are we doing specifically to improve on our vertical passing game?

Well, all I can really tell you, George, without giving away detailed information, is that we worked really hard and specifically on that phase of our passing game during the spring, and it will remain a point of strong emphasis in fall camp.

Keep in mind that with any given team, our staff plans around understanding that team’s major strengths and playing to them, while at the same time working to improve other phases of the game. That’s true on both sides of the ball.

Other thoughts on that would be that Stephen McGee has two things going for him right now that he didn’t have last August – his throwing arm totally healthy, and a year under his belt as a starter. You might recall that he didn’t throw passes at full strength until the week before the first game in 2006. That certainly had some effect on our deep passing plans early in the season.

Chad is very skilled, hard working and a clutch performer. The honest truth is that he is too small for the NFL. I'd like to see him get into coaching.

True. But they probably had more hype and better exposure than he did. That counts for a lot. Without that it's hard to get a foot in the door if you don't fit a preconcieved notion of what the phyiscal makeup of your position should be.

size doesn't matter that much in the NFL. Ask former K-State running back Darren Sproles. 5'6", 180 lbs (probably generous measurements)

ask Ernest Givens (sp?)

There are exceptions but that doesn't mean it was easy for them to get in.

Dante Hall, anyone?

Well he was a tad bit more spryer then Chad. Don't know if spryer is a word. I don't know if Chad can leap over a defense, get clipped in the leg and end up doing an accidental double flip with tripple gainer for a touchdown like Ernest Givens did all the time.

But seriously that sucks. Chad was clutch for us. We'll always remember him. The NFL is a tough place nowadays.

Chad reminds me of Matt Bumgardner (sp?) with a lot more speed! Great Ags, but just not built for the NFL.

Or your version

Truth is after the injury, he never regained the same speed he once had. He was just a little slower and with his set of skills that meant everything

Good to hear that the Virtical Passing game will be a point of focus... 2nd time this off-season I have seen Fran point that out...

I haven't seen Sproles play in the NFL.

Interesting. He is a returner. Good for him, he was amazing in college (even though we killed his early Heisman campaign in 2004 at Kyle).
